Leo Martin
Businessman Dies
Rites Held For
Leo Martin, 49,
Of Waltonville
Funeral services were held at 2:00
p.m. Monday for Leo Martin, a Waltonville businessman and
one of Jefferson county's best known and liked citizens. Mr. Martin, 49,
died at 12:10 p.m.
Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital following an apparent heart attack.
His sudden and unexpected death came as a shock to the Waltonville community
and his many
friends throughout Jefferson county. For the past 25 years Mr. Martin,
who was known as "Bud"
by his friends, had operated a garage and service station at Waltonville.
He became suddenly ill
Sunday morning and was taken to the hospital, where he died shortly after
noon. Mr. Martin
was active in community affairs
at Waltonville over the years, having served on both the school
board and the village board. He was also active in politics, serving as
Republican precinct committeeman,
a position he held at the of his death. He was a member of the Waltonville
Methodist church, Masonic
Lodge 918 of Sesser, Ainad Temple of East St. Louis, Knights Templar, the
Jefferson County Shrine Club,
and the Modern Woodman of America.
He was born January 7, 1916 in Jefferson county, the son of Krekel and
Nellie (Shelton) Martin.
He was a lifetime citizen of this county. He was a lifetime citizen of
this county. He was
married to Marjorie Mannen, who
survives. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Nellie Martin
of Waltonville; and a sister, Mrs. Max Shurtz of Waltonville.
Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Fry Funeral Home
in Waltonville,
with the Rev. E. L. Gulley officiating. Burial was in Knob Prairie cemetery.
