Jewell (Smith) McCormack
Jewell (Smith) McCormack, 96, of Waltonville died 2:35 a.m. Jan. 24, 2005, at Jeffersonian Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Jewell was born Dec. 5, 1908, the only child of Levi and Ella (Downen) Smith on a farm near Scheller. She married Burrell Shurtz (deceased) in 1929, They had two children, Ella Leora Shurtz (deceased(, and J.D. Shurtz, who resides in Waltonville with his wife Donnie. She had two grandsons, David Shurtz and wife Nancy of Sesser and Bruce Shurtz and wife Sandra of Waltonville. Her pride and joy were her four beautiful great-granddaughters: Rachel, Sarah, Charla and Elizabeth. In 1946, she married a wonderful man, Nelson McCormack(deceased), and they resided on the farm until 1989, when they moved to Waltonville to be near their son. Jewell was known for her musical ability and could play just about any musical instrument there was. She played the piano at church for many years in Waltonville. She and Nelson sang at many funerals and specials at church. Jewell's biggest love was for her Lord and Savior and her church. Her hobbies were flowers, and she had many inside and out. She made many quilts and could knit, crochet and tat. Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with the Rev. Mike Gillock officiating. Interment will follow at Dryden Cemetery in rural Scheller. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. For those who wish, memorials may be made to the roof fund at First Free Will Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon and will be accepted at the funeral home. Newell Funeral Home in Mt.
