Mt.
Vernon Boy
Dies In Defense
Of His Country
William Merritte Moss Sleeps
The Sleep That Knows
No Waking.
Member of Marine Corps, Killed in
Action June 11- Landed Over seas on Twenty-fifth Birthday.
From Friday's Daily-Register.)
"Killed in action June 11, tells
the story of the heroic death of one of Jefferson county's bravest
sons,
the first to give his life on the
battlefield for his country, and to fall fighting that humanity democracy
may live,
that the home, the foundation of
society, may be preserved, and that not only Europe but America also may
be made a safe place in which to
live.
William Merritte Moss. sleeps on
the battlefield of France but his spirit will live with that of other immortals
as long as time shall endure.
One of the first of Jefferson county's
sons to answer the call to the colors, he responded manfully. In
this as in everything he did he
threw his whole soul. The marine branch of the service appealed to him
as he
loved the great outdoors and found
much pleasure in nature. The world of waters opened up great possibilities
to his youthful mind, and when the
call of his country came he soon decided in which branch of the service
he
would enlist, and if need be, make
the supreme sacrifice. That he made the sacrifice, dying a soldier
and a man there is ample proof.
He Fought a Good Fight. The nobility of the nature of Merrritte Moss will
be
an inspiration to all who knew him.
His was a nature and mind fitted for big tasks and glorious undertakings.
His cheerfulness was proverbial;
his good nature contagious. His good mind was keen and alert
and he saw the good in life, the
brightness, the silver line behind the darkest cloud. In a letter to his
father, Angus I. Moss, some time
ago he wrote,
"Dad if anything happens to me,
you will know I fought a good fight."
