The Hicks - Townsend Families

William Norton Hicks was born in Whitby, Canada on the 9th of January 1859. He moved with his family sometime after 1861 to Warren IL in Jo Daviess County. His family consisted of his parents, Thomas S. and Harriet (Mathewson) Hicks, his sister Florence Helene and brother Albert D. Hicks.

William Norton Hicks and Lettie Mary Townsend were married in Rush Township, Jo Daviess County IL on the 24th of December 1879. Lettie Mary Townsend, daughter of Samuel Asher & Rebecca Matilda (Borthwick) Townsend, was the third of eleven children, born 31 October 1859 in Rush Township. William Norton Hicks died Sept 13,1938 in Stockton, Lettie Mary died 27 June 1945 also in Stockton.

Thomas Asher Hicks, only child and son of William Norton & Lettie Mary (Townsend) Hicks,

was born May 1, 1882 in Warren, Jo Daviess County Ill. (This Photo is 1899-1900.

He graduated from Stockton High School in 1900. Thomas was married on 29 May 1906 in Chicago to Jennie Matilda Brown, daughter of Frederick & Matilda (Peterson) Brown. Jennie was born 30 November1883 in Chicago. Jennie died on the 12th of June 1955 in Stockton, Jo Daviess County. Thomas' death occured 30th of May 1972 in Wichita TX

Stockton's Ball Team of 1899

Here we reproduce a picture of one of Stockton's old-time base ball teams. This group played together in 1899, under the able management of Fred Ray, and were called "Ray's Colts."

During the season of '99 they played 24 games an won 22.
