JOHN B. BUCKLEY - Last evening at 7:30 o'clock Mr. John Buckley, the veteran railroader and old citizen, passed peacefully away at the family residence, 933 Clay Street, at the age of 66 years. He had been confined to his bed but two weeks, becoming ill immediately upon his return from the funeral of his son, John Buckley, Jr., whose death was noted in the Herald at the time. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but will be announced later. Mr. Buckley was born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania , July 4, 1832, and came to East Dubuque in 1855, entering the employ of the Illinois Central railroad as brakeman, with which road he was connected in various ways up to the time of his death. In 1857, Mr. Buckley was married to Miss Catherine McManus of Galena, and twelve children were born to them, nine boys and three girls. The surviving children are: William L., station agent for the Illinois Central at Primghar, Iowa, Charles J, engineer on the Illinois Central at Waterloo, Henry, call boy for the Illinois Central, Martin H, Daniel L., and Warren L. Buckley, Miss Annie Buckley, and Mrs. Eldon Fisher. Besides his wife and children, a brother Dan Buckley of Denver, and a sister Mrs. A. M. Carlton, of Rock Island, Ill., survive him. Mr. Buckley was a member of Friendship Lodge No.168, A. O. U. W. East Dubuque. Up to ten years ago he was a resident of East Dubuque and served the people there in various public positions. He was at different times mayor of the city, alderman, school director, city marshal, constable and deputy sheriff and in all displayed that fidelity to duty which was so marked a characteristic of the man. Of his railroad career with the Central road, covering all the days that have elapsed since 1855, much may be said. He entered the Central's employ as a brakeman on Conductor Thayer's train. The road then extended only to Amboy, Ill. Later Mr. Buckley was a baggageman and in 1862 baggage agent at East Dubuque. Then East Dubuque (or Dunleith) was an important station on the Illinois Central. Dunleith was really the railroad metropolis and the village of Dubuque only basked in its reflected glory. Nine years ago last May, Mr. Buckley removed with his family to this city, transferring the scene of his railroad duties to the Illinois Central railroad depot here. He was the oldest railroad man in Dubuque and known to nearly all railroaders in Iowa. And it may be said of him, too, that he never had an enemy among either his fellow employees or acquaintances. He was a good citizen in every respect and faithfully fulfilled every duty as a husband and father, a citizen, a public servant.
