JOHN MAHONEY - John Mahoney who passed away at his residence on Bench street Thursday morning, was one of Galena's most prominent and respected citizens. For a generation or more he was actively engaged in mercantile pursuits and was widely and favorable known throughout northwestern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. He was liked most by those who knew him best. He was possessed of excellent business ability and succeeded in amassing quite an estate during his long career as a merchant. He was a man of few words, but was always frank and plain spoken on every occasions. Mr. Mahoney saw Galena in its infancy. Cmoing here in 1832 from County Cork, Ireland, where on September 20, 1830 he was born, he has been almost continuously since the date of his arrival a resident of Galena. When ayoung man he braved the dangers and privations of a journey to California, when the mecca of gold seekers from almost every part of the globe, where he remained for about three years, and returned to Galena in 1854. His expedition to the gold fields was successful from his first arrival there. He had many thrilling experience during his residence with the gold miners, but these were of benefit to him in forming habits and in developing a spirit of industry which later contributed much to his business success. Shortly after his return from the west, on Oct. 8, 1955, Mr. Mahoney was married a few years later he engaged in business and the firm of Curley and Mahoney was organized to carry on a grocery business. the bookkeeper of the firm was Dennis Rochford and in 1857 Mr. Curley wassucceeded by Mr. Rochford who engaged with Mr. Mahoney in the pork packing business under the firm name of Mahoney & Rochford. From the beginning this firm did an extensive business enjoying the confidence of the public and became the synonym of reliability and honesty. In 1861 the firm in addition to their pork packing industry branched out into the wholesaling of groceries and later carried on a large grain and commission business. At this period Galena was a marketing point for a vast territory and teh firm of which Mr. Mahoney was a member was the strongest and the most prominent of its kind. Galena was then also teh distributing center of the lead mining districts and the >>>>. The firm of Mahoney and Rochford continued to exist untio ???? by which time by mutual consent, the partnership which continued during ... of 3 years and which has been ... successful was terminated. Mr. Rochford continued until his death in 1895 to carry on a commission business of the same location which Mr. Mahoney retired from active participation in business affairs and since his retirement led a quiet life. He seemed to appreciate the change of affairs and enjoyed excellent health up to within a comparatively short time of his death. During his last brief illness he realized that the end was drawing nigh and resignedly succumbed to the inevitable. All his children visited him for the last time during his fatal illness; he conversed with them and was rational until the last. During his lifetime Mr. Mahony took no active part in politics but always had an interest in civic affairs and his influence was ever exerted in conserving the best interests of the community. He was a consistent Catholic and a life long worshipper of St. Michaels Church. Mr. Mahoney is survived by his wife and the following children - B.A., John M. and Leslie W. who are in Chicago, Mrs. M.H. Bermingham, Chas. P., Mary Elizabeth, and Loretto J. of this city and Mrs. Capt. C.D. Hayden of Dubuque. Deceased is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Edward Cary of Sioux City and Mrs. Chas. Benegal of San Jose, CA. The funeral will take place at three Sunday afternoon from the late residence of the decedent on Bench street to St. Michael's church where services wil be held, thence to the Catholic cemetery on the East Side where interment will take place.

JOHN H. MAHONEY - Word was received in Galena today of the dath of John M. Mahony at the age of 52 years, who was a son of the late John Mahony, one of the prominent business men of the city a generation ago. The deceased was a graduate of the Galena high school and later was connected with the postoffice under Postmaster Huntington. About 30 years ago he went to Chicago and has been engaged in business in that city ever since. He was the senior member of the firm of Mahony Brothers, wholesalers of cigars with offices in the Omaha building. Besides leaving a widow he was survived by the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. W.H. Birmingham and C.D. Hayden of Dubuque Iowa, Mrs. P.H. Clark of Lawton, OK an dLeslie W. and Elizabeth Mahony of Chicago. The funeral will be held Wednesday from the residence of his brother L.W. Mahony, 5021 Winthrop Avenue, Chicago, to St. ..... Catholic Church and interment will take place in St. Bonaface Cemetry. Members of the C.O.F. Presentation Court, of which the deceased was a member, will attend the funeral.

TREVOR M. McCOLLEY , age 4, Hanover, Illinois, died on Saturday, May 30, 2009 as a result of a house fire in Hanover. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. A memorial fund has been established in Trevor’s memory in care of the Apple River State Bank, P.O. Box 606, Hanover, IL 60141. Trevor was a gift from God, who was called home to be with the Lord. He enjoyed playing in the mud and was fascinated with bugs. He also enjoyed taking baths and playing in the tub, even after the water was all drained. Trevor couldn’t get enough of Alvin and the Chipmunks and their music. He watched Thomas the Train and could name all the trains on The Island of Sodor. When Trevor found a penny, it was the best thing ever, and was known as his “Lucky Day”. Most of all he loved spending time with his mom and papa. Trevor will be dearly missed by his mother, Shannon of Hanover; father, Russell of Mount Carroll, Illinois; two brothers, Christopher McColley of Hanover and Nathan McColley of Mount Carroll; maternal grandparents, John Schuyler of Hanover and Sharon (Randy) Myli of Peoria, Illinois; paternal grandparents, Richard (Ruth) McColley of Mount Carroll; maternal great grandmother, Diane (Joe) Russell of North Fort Myers, Florida; paternal great grandmother, Mary Chadwick of Savanna, Illinois; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Trevor is preceded in death by great grandfathers.

ALBERTA MERCER , age 80, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died June 15, 2009 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home in Elizabeth, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Broadwater, Nebraska. Alberta was born May 2, 1929 in Gurley, Nebraska the daughter of Albert H. and Alice E. (Reinmuth) Fastenau. On December 27, 1946 she married Everett Mercer in Broadwater, Nebraska. Alberta and Everett farmed in the Broadwater area until they began working for the Government Depot of Defense in Nebraska. Through working for the Government they worked and lived in many places including; California, Illinois, Texas, New York, Japan and lastly Oklahoma where they retired. After retiring Alberta enjoyed spending time with family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed sharing her crafts with others. Alberta is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Jerry) Skillman of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Katherine (Jim) Smeloff of Chandler, Arizona; two sons, Walter (Rhonda) Mercer of Hanover, Illinois and Theodore (Connie) Mercer of Omaha, Nebraska; five sisters, Ella Emmett and Pauline Ewing of Mitchell, Nebraska, Lila Dunder of Torrington, Wyoming, Marva Lacy of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Linda Bruntz of Gering, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Marsha Gillis, Jason and Derrick Mercer, Sara Lobiondo and Steve Skillman; seven great grandchildren, Heidi, Holly, Heather, Hagin, Harper, Quincy, and Ethan. Alberta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Everett Mercer in 1988, one grandson Corey Walter; and one sister, Ladella Meyer.

CLARA (VIRTUE) MILLEN , 95, 550 East Carl Sandburg Drive, Galesburg, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008 in Galesburg Cottage Hospital, Galesburg. She was born on Feb. 2, 1913 in Hanover, Ill., the daughter of Alfred R. and Bessie (Nesbitt) Virtue. She married the Rev. Dr. William D. Millen on June 24, 1936 in Hanover. He preceded her in death on May 14, 2005. She taught rural school for several years and was a 1936 graduate of Monmouth College. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and served as secretary and clerical associate for Major Mission Fund and Church Finance Campaign Ministry Service. Survivors include one son, Dr. James W. (Gail) Millen, Westland, Mich.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Armstrong, Hanover. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; a daughter, Mary Cook on Jan. 6, 2008; and a brother. Memorial services were held Feb. 8, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, Galesburg, with the Rev. David Parker officiating. Burial of cremains will be held in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Galesburg, at a later date. Memorials may be made to Monmouth College, First Presbyterian Church, Galesburg, or Rio Presbyterian Church.

ROBERT MILLS , age 86, of Savanna, Illinois, died on Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at his home. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2005 at the United Presbyterian Church in Hanover. Reverend Kendrick Matthews will officiate. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2005 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. Robert was born December 14, 1918, the son of Hugh A. and Lois (Steele) Mills, in Hanover, Illinois. Robert graduated Hanover High School, Class of 1936. On August 26, 1940, Robert married Charlotte M. McKinley. This union brought forth ten children. Robert and Charlotte were members of the United Presbyterian Church in Hanover; he was an Elder in the church for over sixty years. Robert farmed in rural Hanover from 1939 till retirement in 1973. He also worked as a Professional Photographer from 1950 to 1956. From 1973 to 1990 Robert worked as an Independent Trucker for Dubuque Packing Company, transporting meat to the East Coast. Robert will be deeply missed by his wife, Charlotte; seven sons, Carlton (Joan) Mills of Champaign, Illinois, J. Richard (Cheryl) Mills of Dixon, Illinois, Lt. Col. Peter Mills of McAlester, Oklahoma, James (Sharon) Mills of Savanna, Doug (Cathy) Mills of Alachua, Florida, Andrew Mills of Thomson, Illinois and Phillip (Lisa) Mills of Savanna; three daughters, Susan (Jackson) Greathouse of Reedy, West Virginia, Jane Rieman of Decatur, Illinois, and Debbie (Darrold) Kennedy of Savanna; Twenty-five grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister who died in infancy.

LOLA L. MONROE ,96, of Shullsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Lafayette Manor, Darlington. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Centenary United Methodist Church, Shullsburg, with the Rev. Brenda Whitford officiating. Burial will be in Scales Mound Cemetery, Scales Mound Township, Ill. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at O'Flahrity-Erickson Funeral Home, Shullsburg. She was born on Feb. 8, 1912, in White Oak Springs Township, Lafayette County, daughter of Thomas and Jeanetta (Berryman) Monroe. Lola attended grade school in New Diggings and high school in Shullsburg, where she graduated in 1930. She was an excellent student and always said her favorite subject was arithmetic. Lola moved with her family from the farm to Shullsburg in 1940. She took a position as a bookkeeper at the Shullsburg Electric Utility, a job she enjoyed and proudly held for 34 years until her retirement at the age of 70. Along with her work, she cared for her father until his death at the age of 97, and her older sister Ruth, who passed away at the age of 87. Lola's life was dedicated to being a faithful Christian, a contributor to the community and a good friend to all. The legacy she leaves is deep and far-reaching. Lola served her church, the Centenary United Methodist Church in Shullsburg, in many ways. She was the church treasurer and president of the United Methodist Women for many years. Lola taught Sunday School for 20 years and served as the school's secretary and treasurer. Although Lola did not have children of her own, she has touched the lives of countless young people in the Shullsburg area. Through her work and through her church. In the Shullsburg community, Lola was well known for her ability to keep accurate financial records. She generously gave of her time as the treasurer of the Senior Center and secretary and treasurer of the Shullsburg Historical Society. Surprisingly, Lola also found time to quilt, write letters to friends and family, bake, read her Bible and spend time with her family. She loved living in Shullsburg and felt blessed to have so many dear friends, both young and old. Lola's family members feel that her constant love, encouragement and modeling of how to be a "truly good" person has enabled them to lead richer, more meaningful lives. For the past six years, Lola was a resident of the Shullsburg Home where she had wonderful, loving care. Lola will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her. Surviving are a nephew, Chet (Ruth) Melcher, of Racine; a niece, Carolyn (Jerry) Sullivan, of Broomfield, Colo.; six great-nieces and nephews, Jennifer Sullivan, Matt (Beth) Melcher, Sarah (Bill) Barna, Phil (Dana) Melcher, Dan Sullivan and Brent Melcher; five great-great nieces and nephews: Iris, Lauren Lola, Lola Isabelle, Oliver and Julia Melcher. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Ruth (Monroe) Melcher; and two siblings in infancy.
