GARY SAAM , 65, of Scales Mound, died at 11:25 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, at home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Schapville, with Pastor Barb Rapp officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Miller and Steinke Funeral Home, Scales Mound. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Gary owned and operated Gary Saam Construction, Inc., which he started in 1966 and retired from in March of 2008. He was born on April 2, 1943, in Dubuque, son of Leo "Bill" and Marcella "Sally" (Hasken) Saam. He married Lyla Schultz on June 26, 1971, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. Gary was a veteran of the Navy. He enjoyed riding his Harley, fishing, golfing, playing cards and being with his family and friends. Gary loved Jo Daviess County and always said there was no better place to live. Surviving are his wife, Lyla (Schultz) Saam; three daughters, Heather Saam, of Portland, Becky (Dan) Cogan, of Galena, and Teri (Randy) Goodwin, of Scales Mound; six grandchildren, Trish Goodwin, Mark Goodwin, Kyle Goodwin, Julia Cogan, Anna Cogan and Evan Cogan; a brother, Keith Saam, of Scales Mound; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Lana Saam.

JOHN HENRY SANDERS - Funeral services for John Henry Sanders 84 who died at 1 a.m. Saturday morning (May 21, 1938) in Finley Hospital Dubuque IA were held at 2 o'clock yesterday at the Nash Funeral Chapel with Rev. E.A. Ballis of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was at Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Sanders was rescued from his flooded cabin near Menominnee Station on the Mississippi bottom lands Friday by chief of police Roy Felderman and assistant fire chief Leroy Kraehmer by power boat and was removed to the Dubuque Hospital from Galena by ambulance. His plight was first discovered by Joseph Budden supervisor of Menominee twp. who enlisted Galena aid in rescuing Mr. Sanders. He was born in Galena Christmas day 1853 the son of A. F.E. Sanders and spent his entire life in this county. He was a member of the Fire Company #2 for 51 years and had served the city as night officer for a number of years. Mr. Sanders had never married and made his home on the Mississippi for a number of years. He is survived only by neices and nephews Mrs. Albert Stoffregan of Galena, Mrs. Clarence Willing of Dubuque, Mrs. Beta Beckman of Los Angeles CA, Charles Hansing of Kankakee, Homer, George and Fred Hansing of North Hollywood CA.

BEULAH (BENNETT) SCHAIBLE , age 91, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover, Illinois. A visitation will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. one hour prior to service at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Memorials may be given to Big Meadows Nursing Home, 1000 Longmoor, Savanna, IL 61074. Beulah was born on October 31, 1916, the daughter of Thomas and Harriett (Straight) Bennett in Rice Twp., Illinois. She married Vernon "Piggy" M. Schaible on April 22, 1933 in Galena, Illinois. Vernon passed away on December 28, 1990. Residing in Hanover she was active in community affairs, raising a family and being a working parent. Over the years she worked at; Atwoods in Stockton, Savanna Army Depot, Sandman's Drug Store and Henschels Grocery Store in Hanover, the Hanover Woolen Mill, and then retiring from Eaton Manufacturing at Hanover, in 1978. Beulah was an active member of the VFW auxiliary. She enjoyed dancing, reading, cooking, gardening and playing cards mostly Pinochle. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Beulah is survived by her son and his wife, Neil and Hazel (Cooper) Schaible of Valparaiso, Florida; three grandchildren, Deborah Schaible of Crestview, Florida; Linda Schaible of Orlando Florida, Julie O'Born, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; four great grandchildren, Eric Hood and April Hood of Ransom, Illinois, Benjamin O'Born and Rachel O'Born of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Beulah is preceded in death by her parents; Thomas and Harriett Bennett, her husband, Vernon "Piggy" M. Schaible, and an infant son, Dale Schaible in 1940. MARIAN R. SCHAIBLE , age 99, of Elizabeth, Illinois died Friday, March 16, 2007 at the Dubuque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dubuque, Iowa. Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 20 at the Zion Presbyterian Church, Schapville, Illinois, with Pastor Dottie Morizzo and the Reverend Douglas Hall officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover, Illinois. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 19 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m.. A memorial fund has been established in MarionÂ's name. Marion was born April 7, 1907 on the family farm, rural Hanover, Illinois, the son of John and Anna (Krippendorf) Schaible. Marion attended the Pleasant Hill Country School and graduated from the Hanover High School with the Class of 1926. On October 27, 1966, Marion married Phyllis Turner. He worked for Socony Vacuum Oil (Mobil Oil) for many years. Marion also drove school bus for the Elizabeth School District. He retired from Atwoods in Stockton after working several years. Marion was a member of the Zion Presbyterian Church, Schapville, the Kavanagh Masonic Lodge, Elizabeth and was a 32nd degree Mason with the Freeport Consistery. He enjoyed woodworking, restoring antiques, dancing and going out to eat. He was an avid Green Bay Packers and Chicago White Sox fan. He had the fortune of throwing out the Â"first pitchÂ" on August 25, 2002 for his 95th birthday. Marion will be dearly missed by his wife, Phyllis of Elizabeth; his daughter, Helen Kilgore of Elizabeth; son in-law, Joe Fosler of Freeport; nine grandchildren, Denise (Dan) Green of Galena, Herb (Cindy) Wilson of Monroe, WI, Julie (Robert) Nesbitt of Mukilteo, WA, Kevin (Margie) Schaible of Collinsville, IL, Kerry (Fran) Schaible of Cherry Valley, IL, Kelly (Stuart) Hendricks of Cherry, IL, Joanne Fosler of Freeport, K.C. (Wendy) Schaible of Rockford and Keith (Wendy) Schaible of Rockford; four step-grandchildren, Patrick (Sherry) Kilgore of Lebanon, PA, Michael (Monica) Kilgore of Dubuque, Charles (JoAnne) Kilgore of Albuquerque, NMand Joyce (Brian) Carlin of New Glarus, WI; 59 great grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; 24 great-great grandchildren and step-great-great grandchildren; a sister in-law, Doris Goff; and numerous nieces and nephews. JULIE A. (GALLAGHER) SCHLICHTING - Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Julie A. Schlichting, 78, Stockton, Ill., died Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport, Ill. She was born on Sept. 20, 1929 in Stockton, the daughter of Jack and Helen (Parker) Gallagher. She married James Schlichting on June 18, 1951 in Stockton. She was a 1947 graduate of Stockton High School and graduated from Beloit College in 1951. She taught reading in Muscatine, Iowa, for 10 years, helped with Farm Resourses during the 1980s and had been a realtor. Survivors include her husband, James; three sons, Jay (Kandy) Schlichting, Vinton, Iowa, Jeff (Shirley) Schlichting, Omaha, Neb., and Jack (Heather) Schlichting, Cannon Falls, Minn.; two daughters, Janan (Steve) Smith, Freeport, and Joy (Dean) Knudson, Hudson, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Sara Downing, Jed Smith, Rachel Smith, Jaylene Lucas, Bobby Schlichting, Sonya Knudson, Reed Knudson, Emily Schlichting, Eric Schlichting, Grant Schlichting and Ryan Schlichting; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant brother, James. Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, March 28 at the Hermann Funeral Home in Stockton, where the family will have a time of sharing and celebrating memories of Julie at 7:00 p.m. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Schapville, Ill., with the Rev. William T. Dahlberg officiating. Burial will be in Shepherd of the Hills Cemetery in Schapville. A Julie Schlichting memorial fund has been established. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael McFadden and the ICU staff at FHN Memorial Hospital for their excellent care.

ERIN SCHOENHARD , 23, of Galena, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, of the eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia, a disease she struggled with the past eight years. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Galena Bible Church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena. She was born on Aug. 1, 1984, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, daughter of Carl Jr. and Ann (Oldenburg) Schoenhard. Erin graduated from Wahlert High School in 2002, with high honors. She graduated from Loras College in May 2007, with a bachelor of science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry. She planned to attend pharmacy graduate school in the fall of 2008. She was presently working at the Locust Street Hy-Vee Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician. Erin always had a smile on her face and her personality would brighten up a room. She loved her horse, Java, competing in numerous equestrian competitions where fun was more important than winning. She enjoyed her numerous pets, especially her newest kitten, Maddie. She also enjoyed spending quality time with her many friends, as well as spending time on the lake fishing with her brother, Blaine. Erin cherished the special times spent with her nieces, nephews, and cousins. Surviving are her parents, Carl Jr. and Ann; her brothers, Blaine and Jon (Jodi) Schoenhard, both of Galena; her sisters, Jody (Mark) Calvert, of Galena, Sharie (Tim) Maloney, of Lake Forest, and Kim, of Florida; her grandparents, Francis (Dorothy) Oldenburg and Lorraine Schoenhard, all of Galena; her boyfriend, Sean Carter, of Galena; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Carl "Bud" Schoenhard; an aunt, Sherry Oldenburg; a cousin, Tony Oldenburg; and her uncle, Jim Schoenhard.

RAYMOND SCHRECK , age 86, of Lake Delton, died peacefully in the comfort of his own home following a courageous battle with cancer with his loving family by his side on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003. Ray was born on Oct. 13, 1917, in Elizabeth, Ill., the son of Louis and Anna (Goldhagen) Schreck. For many years, Ray was a mechanic and he retired in 1986. He lived in Reedsburg for awhile and then moved to Lake Delton in 1969, where he has resided since. Ray is survived by his son, Richard (Candi) Schreck of Scales Mound, Ill.; daughters, Nila Randles of Janesville and Lilah Hardin of Baraboo; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruth Berlage and Florence Fischer; brothers, Walter, Clem and Douglas; former wife, LaVonne Allen Ivarsen; and a special friend and dancing partner of 16 years, Frieda Buskager. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. CECILIA'S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Wisconsin Dells with Father Felix Oehrlein officiating. Raymond's cremains will be interred at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Elizabeth, Ill. Visitation will be held at the PICHA FUNERAL HOME of Lake Delton, on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. The family would especially like to thank Home Health United Hospice Care.

ROSEMARY ANN (HARKNES) SCHRECK , age 89, of Stockton, Illinois died Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Calvary United Methodist Church, Stockton, Illinois. Burial will be in Ladies Union Cemetery, Stockton. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, Illinois and 10:00 – 11:00 am Wednesday at the Church, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Rosemary's memory. Rosemary was born October 9, 1918 in Elizabeth Township, the daughter of Edward and Elfie (Hood) Harkness. After graduating from the Elizabeth High School with the Class of 1936, she married Delmar Schreck on June 25, 1938. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1996. Rosemary and Delmar lived near Woodbine where they farmed. After retirement, they moved to Stockton. She was an excellent cook and served many family get-togethers. She loved playing cards, eating out, dancing, and spending time with her family. Rosemary was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stockton and the Woodbine Home Extension Unit. Rosemary will be dearly missed by two daughters, Kathleen (Donald) Williams of Arena, Wisconsin and Marilyn (Robert) Detwiler of Apple River, Illinois; four grandchildren, Eric (Sheila) Williams of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Paul Williams of Olathe, Kansas, Denise (Chris) Feller of Waterloo, Wisconsin and Brad (Becky) Detwiler of Stockton; three great grandchildren, Zachary Williams, Anne Marie Williams and Joshua Detwiler. Rosemary is preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Glenn and Keith Harkness.

ORAL L. SCHULTZ , 89, of Galena, died at 11:55 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Galena, with Pastor Phillip Brown officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. He was born on March 24, 1919, in Guilford Township of Jo Daviess County, son of Joseph L. and Mabel (Schlichting) Schultz. He married Gladys Freese on May 3, 1958, in Freeport; she preceded him in death on June 2, 1994. He farmed in his earlier years in Guilford Township and later farmed in East Galena Township. He also operated Schultz School Bus Service for 50 years, from 1946 to 1996, first with his father and later with his son, Joseph. Oral was a member of the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed his Allis Chalmers tractors and Hereford cattle. Surviving are two sons, Marlo (Sue) Schultz, of Galena, and Joseph (Karen) Schultz, of East Dubuque; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Courtney, Michael, Darin, Sarah and Kyle; two sisters, Donna (Maurice) Beyer, of Elizabeth, and Orvilla Stiles, of Columbus, Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

EDWARD P. SCHUMAN , age 73, of Elizabeth died Friday, October 12, 2007, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Elizabeth. Burial will be in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Elizabeth. Visitation will be held from 5­8 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. Ed was born July 26, 1934, the son of John and Ruth (Heddinghouse) Schuman in Keota, Iowa. Graduate of Cascade High School, Cascade, Iowa. He then served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. On September 15, 1967 Ed married Karyl Lopp at Galena. Ed was a Truck Driver most of his life. He also drove a School Bus for River Ridge School District. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved doing carpenter work and fishing. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Ed will be dearly missed by his wife, Karyl Schuman of Shorewood; two sons, David (Tina) Schuman of Tacoma, Washington and Daryl (Nikki) Schuman of New Berlin, Wisconsin; one daughter, Melissa (Mike) Ryerson of Joliet; six grandchildren, Desiree, Tanner, Mitch, Michael, Morgan and Miranda; four brothers and four sisters. His parents and two sisters, precede Ed in death.

DONNA M. (BASTIAN) SHERRARD , , 72, Galena, Ill., died at 9:40 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at home surrounded by her family. She was born on July 7, 1935 in Galena, the daughter of Clyde Burnell and Vivian (Rigdon) Bastian. She married Thomas B. Sherrard on Aug. 9, 1955 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galena. She was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's Academy in Dubuque, Iowa, and was formerly a cook for the Galena School System, retiring in June of 2007. She was a member of St. Michael's Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of America-Court Isabella 572. She loved crafts, especially crocheting and sewing and spending time with her co-workers at school and Galena Pirates athletics. Her greatest joy was spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Thomas; two daughters, Theresa (Darrel) Eustice, Galena, and Patricia (friend, Pat Thomas) Houtakker, Shullsburg, Wis.; four grandchildren, Christopher (Angie Martelle) Smith, Chad (Amanda) Smith, and Nathan and Katrina Houtakker; one step-grandson, Cody Eustice; two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Mason Smith; a step-great-granddaughter, Megan Marie; one sister, Doris (Dan Levens) Glick, Galena; a sister-in-law, Rose (Delbert) Ertmer, Woodbine, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Charles Sherrard; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Marcella Sherrard; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Glick. Visitation will be held from 3:30-8:00 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29 at the Miller and Steinke Funeral Home, 235 South Bench St., Galena. The parish rosary/scripture service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2008 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Galena, with the Rev. Chris Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Galena. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, and the oncology and surgery departments at Medical Associates of Dubuque.

MARK A. SIMMONS , age 53, of Mount Carroll, Illinois, passed away March 8, 2006 at Morrison Community Hospital. Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2006 the Frank-Law Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Reverend Rick Zickefoose of the Mt. Carroll Church of God will officiate. Burial will take place in Ladies Union Cemetery, Stockton, Illinois. Friends may call from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Frank-Law Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Memorials maybe made in Mark's name. Mark was born June 16, 1952, the son of Floyd E. and Jessie M. (Stone) Simmons in Freeport, Illinois. He graduated from Lanark High School, Class of 1970. On October 10, 1980, Mark married Norma Salzer in Mt. Carroll. He worked as a Carpenter and Auto Mechanic. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography, traveling and exploring local points of interest. He loved the outdoors and all it had to offer. Mark will be deeply missed by his wife, Norma, two sons, Mychael D. Salzer and Raymond P. McCann of Carbondale, Illinois; two brothers, Tom (Luann) Simmons of Verona, Wisconsin and Leland (Zyanna) Simmons of Platteville, Colorado; one sister, Irene (John) Marean of Scioto Mills, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews. Mark is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Roger, and Stanley and one infant sister, Donna.

EDNA BURTON CORBETT SIRR , well known and beloved resident of Morris, succumbed at her home here on Sunday (August 1, 1937). She had been in poor health for a number of years but was seriously ill for only two days and word of her passing came as a shock to the family and to her host of friends and acquaintances. Edna Irene Burton was born in Scales Mound, Illinois on Sept 4, 1871, member of an early American family and one which figured actively in the history of this nation. Her great grandfather, Henry Willard, fought in the Revolutionary War. During the Civil War several members of the family fought for the North while others fought for the Confederate cause. From Scales Mound, Ill., the deceased moved to Fremont, Nebr., and from there to Dubuque, Iowa. She came to Morris 44 years ago and she had resided here ever since. She was united in marriage to Alexander Sirr on Dec. 12, 1894. The ceremony being performed at Morris by Rev. Tebbetts. Mr. Sirr passed away on Nov 3, 1920. Mrs. Sirr was a member of the Congregational Church and gave liberally of her time and efforts to its welfare. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, of the Women's Benefit Association, and of the Royal Neighbors. Mourning her death are the following daughters and sons: Laura (Mrs. J.T. Dauber) of Henry, Ill.; Rupert Sirr of Morris; Ruby Sirr of Morris; Mrs. Anna Bingham of Minneapolis; Lucas Sirr of Wabasha, Minn.; Katheryn (Mrs. J.H. Carter) of Bismarck, ND; Myrtle (Mrs William Kaley) of Chokio (MN); and Marion (Mrs. Troy Chambers) of Clarksville, Mo. One son, Leonard Willard, proceded her in death. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and by one brother, Joseph Burton of Lebanon, Oregon. Funeral services were conducted Wed afternoon at 3:30 from the Olson Chapel, Rev Fred A. Meske officiating. Burial was in Summit Cemetery. The pallbearers were C.L. Dolva, L.G. Morley, A.J. Slamen, Frank Ware, H. R. Schlatter and E.A. Judd.

PETER WILLIAM SPECHT , 74, retired Galena grocer, passed away from a heart attack at 7:05 o’clock Friday evening at his home at 201 Jackson Street, Seminary Hill, Galena. His sudden passing comes as a shock to his family and friends. Peter William Specht was born in Galena, Illinois on May 19, 1873, the son of Peter and Christina (Hess) Specht. He attended the Lutheran Parochial School and was a faithful member of St. Mathews Lutheran church. On May 30, 1894, he was united in marriage to Sophie Allen of Galena. The ceremony was performed at St. Mathews Lutheran church by Rev. August Klindworth. Mr. And Mrs. Specht celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1944. They were the parents of five children who survive: Mrs. Earl (Hattie) Alexander of Tampa, Florida, May Specht, at home in Galena, Allen Specht of Galena, Illinois, Mrs. Charles (Rocile) Youngren of Rockford, Illinois, Helen Specht of St. Petersburg, Florida, Also surviving are two grandchildren and one great grandchild: Marlo Specht of Elizabeth, Illinois and Leslie Allen Specht Mary Lou Youngren of Rockford, Illinois Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs. Louise Sincock of Galena, Mrs. Elizabeth Frazer of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Mr. Specht was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away on January 27, 1946, his parents, one brother, and two sisters. Mr. Specht resided in Galena all his life. As a young man, he learned the grocery business working for the H.C. Kuchemann and the John J. Genz Groceries. In 1921, with his son-in-law E.H. Alexander, he purchased the Genz Grocery Store, which he continued to operate as the Specht and Alexander Grocery for 16 years. He retired from active business in 1937. By serving the public faithfully for so many years, Mr. Specht was favorably and widely known. He was a devoted father with his primary interests being in his home and family. Mr. Specht will be removed from the Nash Funeral Home to his home on Jackson Street, where friends may call after 7:30 this evening. The funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon from the home at 2:00 o’clock to St Mathews Lutheran church at 2:30. Rev. T.J.F. Pagels, pastor of St. Mathews, will officiate the funeral and burial services. Burial will be made in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetary, Galena.

MARVIN EDWARD SPRECHER , age 83, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 29, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2007, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover with Father Everett J. Hiller as Celebrant and assisted by Deacon Dave Wilbricht. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Hanover, with Military Rites accorded by the Hanover Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #5300. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2007, at the Law Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Brownie was born on May 20, 1924, the son of Art and Ethel (Strait) Sprecher in Spring Green, Wisconsin. He graduated from Lone Rock High School in 1943. Brownie served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. On October 21, 1950, Brownie married Margaret Fern Phillips in San Diego, California, and they recently celebrated their fifty-seventh wedding anniversary. Brownie worked as a security guard at the Savanna Army Depot until his retirement in 1987. During his retirement, Brownie enjoyed his many years as sexton of the Hanover cemeteries. Brownie's favorite past-time was spending time with his family, whom he adored. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he enjoyed having a special treat ready for them at each visit. BrownieÂ's other interests included playing cards and gardening. He was known for his generosity and was loved by all who knew him. Brownie will be dearly missed by his wife Fern; four daughters, Linda Schoenmann of Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Brenda Sprecher of Lone Rock, Wisconsin, Diana (Tom) Taylor of Columbia, Missouri, and Pam (Eric) Wheelwright of Elizabeth, Illinois; one son, Perry Sprecher (special friend Jeannie Carter) of Hanover, Illinois; six grandchildren, Chad (Trang) Sprecher of Beijing, China, Brooke and Morgan Wheelwright of Elizabeth, Illinois, Tina (Jeff) Adams of Aurora, Missouri, Michele and Keria Sprecher of Hanover, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Wil Adams and Zoe Sprecher; two step-grandchildren, Grant Taylor of Columbia, Missouri, and Gavin Carter of Hanover, Illinois; two brothers, Walter (Beulah) Sprecher of Sauk City, Wisconsin, and Milton Sprecher of Spring Green, Wisconsin; three sisters, Arline Pace of Altadena, California, Lorna (Wayne) Anderson of Sauk City, Wisconsin, and Lorene Erickson of Racine, Wisconsin; and sisters-in-law Lorene Sprecher of Plain, Wisconsin, and Florence Sprecher of Spring Green, Wisconsin. Brownie is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Orville, Ervin, Harlan, and Lawrence Sprecher; sisters-in-law Mollie and Shirley Sprecher; brother-in-law Bob Erickson; and son-in-law Bob Schoenmann.

VIVIAN MAYLENE (COX) SPURGEON , age 83, of Mustang, OK died on Friday, December 7, 2001 in Yukon ,OK. She was born August 6, 1918 in Apple River, IL the daughter of the late Ralph and Bertha (Blair) Cox. In 1940 she married Ralph E. Spurgeon and they spent 40 years in the Freeport area before moving to Oswego, IL. She traveled to Arizona for several years before living with her son in Mustang, OK for 8 1/2 years. She was a lifetime member of the Moose. Survivors include her two sons, Ronald of Mustang, OK and Gerald Sr. of Ray City, GA; four grandchildren, Gregory of Yukon, OK, Shelly Tripp of Somonauk, IL, Sara Brown of Dallas, TX and Gerald Jr. of Memphis, TN; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Alton and LaVerne. Funeral time 11:00 A.M. December 11, 2001 on Tuesday at the Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home in Warren, IL. LEVERE L. STEFFES , age 83, of Hanover, Illinois, passed away on February 16, 2008 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home in Elizabeth, Illinois. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover. Pastor Lynn Matthews of the Hanover United Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Massbach, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in LeVere's memory. LeVere was born on July 3, 1924, the son of Fred and Clara (Mattke) Steffes in Massbach, Illinois. He attended area schools and graduated from the Stockton High School. He married Lois Gamble on July 15, 1949. Lois died on April 3, 1986. LeVere farmed all of his life in Derinda Township and Massbach. In his younger years he enjoyed playing softball, and he was also an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing and gardening. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. LeVere will be dearly missed by two daughters, Sherry and Sheila Steffes of Hanover, Illinois; a son Steve (Diana) Steffes of Lanark; three grandchildren, Tina (Connan) Dickman of Lanark, Jason Steffes of Camanche, Iowa, and Blaine Steffes of Kiln, Mississippi; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua and Jared Dickman of Lanark; a brother Raymond (Florence) Steffes of Massbach; and a special friend, Blondie Moldenhauer. LeVere was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lois.

VIOLET E. (HACKER) STEINBERGER , 87, Elizabeth, Ill., died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa. She was born on June 10, 1920 in Guilford Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois, the daughter of Frederick and Effie (Boldt) Hacker. She married Joseph Steinberger on March 18, 1936 in Elizabeth. She attended school in Schapville, Ill., and with her husband, owned the International Harvester Implement. She later worked at the Corral and Mac's Restaurant in Elizabeth. She enjoyed sewing and flower gardening, and she loved to go out to eat and shoppng with her friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include one grandson, Kevin Steinberger of California; one brother, Lester (Fely) Hacker, Pittsburg, Texas; one sister, Lucille Schreck, Bullhead City, Ariz.; many nieces, nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; one son, Joseph Lee Steinberger; one brother, Eldon Hacker; a brother-in-law, Clayton Schreck; and a sister-in-law, Marian Hacker. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Elizabeth. Jean was born August 26, 1918 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Hudoba) Lang. On October 31, 1951, Jean married Jack H. Stuart in Hanover, Illinois, he passed away October 13, 2002. Jean was a homemaker and farm wife, she helped her husband with the grain and livestock on their farm in Hanover from 1951 till 2002. Jean enjoyed working on the farm, especially with the animals and loved being outdoors. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

WILLIAM JAY SULLIVAN , age 67, died suddenly Sunday, November 16, 2008 at his home in Elizabeth. No services will be held. William was born July 19, 1941, the son of John William and Mary (Pollard) Sullivan in Savanna, Illinois. On September 12, 1964, William married Anne Schwirtz in Elizabeth. William owned and operated Sullivan Insurance Company for thirty-two years in Elizabeth. William is survived by his wife, Anne of Elizabeth; a son, John (Sara) Sullivan of Elizabeth a daughter, Jennifer Sullivan of Elizabeth; two sisters, Sue (David) Wilbricht of Hanover and Kathleen Gross of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. His parents precede him in death.

GRACE J. (HOLM) SWANSON , age 91, of Elizabeth, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2006, at her home. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2006 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth, Illinois. Grace was born on December 17, 1914, the daughter of Hjalmar and Augusta (Andersson) Holm in Chicago, Illinois. On November 11, 1939, Grace married Russell J. Swanson in Chicago, Illinois. Russell passed away on March 13, 1992 at his home. Grace was a homemaker, who loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed embroidery and crafts, but most of all she cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren. Grace is survived by three daughters, Judith K. Proud Stadelman of Elizabeth, Illinois, Diane Kostecki of Elizabeth, Illinois and Janis (Michael) Fanning of Homewood, Illinois; one sister LaVerne Boyd of Las Vegas, Nevada; ten grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren. Grace is preceded in death by her husband Russell; one son, Russell; and three brothers, Sigurd, Herbert and Stanley.

MARIE (BINNS) SYMONS 82, of Galena, died April 11, 2008, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 14, at Galena Bible Church, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. The Furlong Funeral Chapel, Galena, is in charge of arrangements. She was born Oct. 13, 1925, in Elizabeth, daughter of Henry and Rosina (Beyer) Binns. She married Donald Symons on June 6, 1943; he preceded her in death in 1989. Marie enjoyed working in her flower gardens and just being around people. She was a member of the Galena Bible Church. Surviving are eight children, Kenneth Symons, Jerry Symons, Richard Symons and Bonnie (William) Peters, all of Galena, Karen Stowe and Margaret Symons, both of Stockton, Ill., Rosie (Anthony) Mann, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Henry (Gerri) Symons, of Adel, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosemary (Robert) Morhardt, and a brother, Norman (Marian) Binns, both of Elizabeth, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Larry and Sammy; a daughter, Delores; two sisters, Mae and Florence; and a brother, Richard.

SAMUEL A. SYMONS - Funeral services for Samuel A. Symons who died at his home on Sunday night after a long illness will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Furlong Chapel Home. Interment will be made in Grant Hill Cemetery. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Absalom Symons he was born in Vinegar Hill Twp. on May 4, 1865 and had lived all his life near Galena. He had been a farmer until he retired and moved to Galena. He was married Dec. 1, 1899 to Elsie Bastian. Mr. Symons is survived by his widow, one daughter Mrs. Harry Wentlender of Galena; four sons, Willard of Albert Lea MN, Delbert, Leroy and Donald all of Galena; one grandson and two grandaughters; five brothers. He was preceded by three children, four sisters and three brothers.
