JOHN HENRY SANDERS - Funeral services for John Henry Sanders 84 who died at 1 a.m. Saturday morning (May 21, 1938) in Finley Hospital Dubuque IA were held at 2 o'clock yesterday at the Nash Funeral Chapel with Rev. E.A. Ballis of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was at Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Sanders was rescued from his flooded cabin near Menominnee Station on the Mississippi bottom lands Friday by chief of police Roy Felderman and assistant fire chief Leroy Kraehmer by power boat and was removed to the Dubuque Hospital from Galena by ambulance. His plight was first discovered by Joseph Budden supervisor of Menominee twp. who enlisted Galena aid in rescuing Mr. Sanders.

He was born in Galena Christmas day 1853 the son of A. F.E. Sanders and spent his entire life in this county. He was a member of the Fire Company #2 for 51 years and had served the city as night officer for a number of years. Mr. Sanders had never married and made his home on the Mississippi for a number of years. He is survived only by neices and nephews Mrs. Albert Stoffregan of Galena, Mrs. Clarence Willing of Dubuque, Mrs. Beta Beckman of Los Angeles CA, Charles Hansing of Kankakee, Homer, George and Fred Hansing of North Hollywood CA.

EDNA BURTON CORBETT SIRR , well known and beloved resident of Morris, succumbed at her home here on Sunday (August 1, 1937). She had been in poor health for a number of years but was seriously ill for only two days and word of her passing came as a shock to the family and to her host of friends and acquaintances. Edna Irene Burton was born in Scales Mound, Illinois on Sept 4, 1871, member of an early American family and one which figured actively in the history of this nation. Her great grandfather, Henry Willard, fought in the Revolutionary War. During the Civil War several members of the family fought for the North while others fought for the Confederate cause. From Scales Mound, Ill., the deceased moved to Fremont, Nebr., and from there to Dubuque, Iowa. She came to Morris 44 years ago and she had resided here ever since. She was united in marriage to Alexander Sirr on Dec. 12, 1894. The ceremony being performed at Morris by Rev. Tebbetts. Mr. Sirr passed away on Nov 3, 1920. Mrs. Sirr was a member of the Congregational Church and gave liberally of her time and efforts to its welfare. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, of the Women's Benefit Association, and of the Royal Neighbors.

Mourning her death are the following daughters and sons: Laura (Mrs. J.T. Dauber) of Henry, Ill.; Rupert Sirr of Morris; Ruby Sirr of Morris; Mrs. Anna Bingham of Minneapolis; Lucas Sirr of Wabasha, Minn.; Katheryn (Mrs. J.H. Carter) of Bismarck, ND; Myrtle (Mrs William Kaley) of Chokio (MN); and Marion (Mrs. Troy Chambers) of Clarksville, Mo. One son, Leonard Willard, proceded her in death. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and by one brother, Joseph Burton of Lebanon, Oregon. Funeral services were conducted Wed afternoon at 3:30 from the Olson Chapel, Rev Fred A. Meske officiating. Burial was in Summit Cemetery. The pallbearers were C.L. Dolva, L.G. Morley, A.J. Slamen, Frank Ware, H. R. Schlatter and E.A. Judd.

PETER WILLIAM SPECHT , 74, retired Galena grocer, passed away from a heart attack at 7:05 o’clock Friday evening at his home at 201 Jackson Street, Seminary Hill, Galena. His sudden passing comes as a shock to his family and friends. Peter William Specht was born in Galena, Illinois on May 19, 1873, the son of Peter and Christina (Hess) Specht. He attended the Lutheran Parochial School and was a faithful member of St. Mathews Lutheran church. On May 30, 1894, he was united in marriage to Sophie Allen of Galena. The ceremony was performed at St. Mathews Lutheran church by Rev. August Klindworth. Mr. And Mrs. Specht celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1944. They were the parents of five children who survive: Mrs. Earl (Hattie) Alexander of Tampa, Florida, May Specht, at home in Galena, Allen Specht of Galena, Illinois, Mrs. Charles (Rocile) Youngren of Rockford, Illinois, Helen Specht of St. Petersburg, Florida,

Also surviving are two grandchildren and one great grandchild: Marlo Specht of Elizabeth, Illinois and Leslie Allen Specht Mary Lou Youngren of Rockford, Illinois Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs. Louise Sincock of Galena, Mrs. Elizabeth Frazer of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Mr. Specht was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away on January 27, 1946, his parents, one brother, and two sisters. Mr. Specht resided in Galena all his life. As a young man, he learned the grocery business working for the H.C. Kuchemann and the John J. Genz Groceries. In 1921, with his son-in-law E.H. Alexander, he purchased the Genz Grocery Store, which he continued to operate as the Specht and Alexander Grocery for 16 years. He retired from active business in 1937. By serving the public faithfully for so many years, Mr. Specht was favorably and widely known. He was a devoted father with his primary interests being in his home and family. Mr. Specht will be removed from the Nash Funeral Home to his home on Jackson Street, where friends may call after 7:30 this evening. The funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon from the home at 2:00 o’clock to St Mathews Lutheran church at 2:30. Rev. T.J.F. Pagels, pastor of St. Mathews, will officiate the funeral and burial services. Burial will be made in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetary, Galena.

VIVIAN MAYLENE (COX) SPURGEON , age 83, of Mustang, OK died on Friday, December 7, 2001 in Yukon ,OK. She was born August 6, 1918 in Apple River, IL the daughter of the late Ralph and Bertha (Blair) Cox. In 1940 she married Ralph E. Spurgeon and they spent 40 years in the Freeport area before moving to Oswego, IL. She traveled to Arizona for several years before living with her son in Mustang, OK for 8 1/2 years. She was a lifetime member of the Moose.

Survivors include her two sons, Ronald of Mustang, OK and Gerald Sr. of Ray City, GA; four grandchildren, Gregory of Yukon, OK, Shelly Tripp of Somonauk, IL, Sara Brown of Dallas, TX and Gerald Jr. of Memphis, TN; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers, Alton and LaVerne. Funeral time 11:00 A.M. December 11, 2001 on Tuesday at the Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home in Warren, IL. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. on December 10, 2001 Monday at the Bartell-Leamon Funeral Home in Warren, IL.

SAMUEL A. SYMONS - Funeral services for Samuel A. Symons who died at his home on Sunday night after a long illness will be held Wednesday afternoon at the Furlong Chapel Home. Interment will be made in Grant Hill Cemetery. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Absalom Symons he was born in Vinegar Hill Twp. on May 4, 1865 and had lived all his life near Galena. He had been a farmer until he retired and moved to Galena.

He was married Dec. 1, 1899 to Elsie Bastian. Mr. Symons is survived by his widow, one daughter Mrs. Harry Wentlender of Galena; four sons, Willard of Albert Lea MN, Delbert, Leroy and Donald all of Galena; one grandson and two grandaughters; five brothers. He was preceded by three children, four sisters and three brothers.
