GENEVIEVE M. VIRTUE
- age 87, of Hanover, IL died January 2, 2004 at Finley Hospital. She was born April 28, 1916, in Elizabeth Township in Jo Daviess County to Wilbur and Agnes (Sherrard) Virtue. She graduated in 1933 from Hanover High School and attended Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL and Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, IL.
After teaching five years in rural schools near Stockton and Hanover she married Orville R. Virtue on August 31, 1940, in Hanover. In addition to farming with her husband she substituted ten years in the Hanover Public Schools, taught Remedial Reading full time from 1966-1980, and later did private tutoring.
Genevieve and her husband moved to a home in Hanover in 1978. She was active in teaching Sunday School, Junior Missionary, and the Good News Club, and in the Presbyterian Women's Organization. She had a strong faith and put her trust in Jesus Christ at an early age.
Survivors include her son Jerry (Nancy) Virtue of Dixon, IL, two daughters Barbara Virtue of Moline, IL and Carole (Steve) Stowell-Virtue of Hanover, IL; three grandchildren, Suzanne (Bryan) Collins of Rockford, IL; Kristin (Keith) Hill of McGregor, IA; and Richard (Amy) Virtue of Hanover, IL; two great grandsons, David Rowe Virtue of Hanover, IL; Weston Dakota Hill of McGregor, IA, and a great granddaughter, Kendall Hill of McGregor, IA. Step-grandchildren Jennifer and Matthew Stowell of Texas and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband in 1985, her parents, two sisters, two brothers, and her granddaughter, Abby.
The funeral was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the Hanover United Presbyterian Church with Reverend Kendrick Matthews officiating. Burial was in the Log Church Cemetery, rural Hanover. Friends were asked to call at the Church one hour prior to the service from 10:00 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
ISABELLE (THOMAS) VIRTUE
- Hanover’s oldest woman passed away Sunday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Gray, after an illness of 10 weeks due to the infirmities of old age. She had been a resident of Hanover and vicinity for many years. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon with services at the Methodist church and burial was made in the family lot in Prospect Hill cemetery. Isabelle Rowe Virtue, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. William Rowe (according to her death certificate --should be Thomas – her father) and Elizabeth Johnston Rowe deceased – was born in Donegal, Ireland. July 16, 1842, and passed away at Hanover Sunday evening Jan. 26, 1936 at the age of 93 years, 6 months and 10 days. When she was a young girl she came to Canada and was married at Port Arthur to Thomas Virtue, who preceded her in death 33 years ago. After her marriage she resided in Galena and Hanover. Mrs. Virtue was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Charles Gray of Hanover (Elizabeth); 3 sons, Robert and Alfred Virtue of near Elizabeth, and James Virtue of Hanover. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Her husband and one son and one daughter preceded her in death.
It was very cold and deep snow – it was said they had to dig out the path to be able to bury her - Funeral services for Mrs. Isabelle Virtue, 93, were held this afternoon at the Prospect Hill Methodist Episcopal church, northwest of Hanover. Rev. Royal J. Synwolt, pastor of Hanover Methodist church, conducted the services and burial was made in the Prospect Hill cemetery. Casket bearers were: Willis Gray (Holmer’s brother), Arthur Virtue and Walter Virtue of Hanover and Orville Virtue, Arthur Sherrard, and Floyd Eustice of Elizabeth. Isabelle Rowe Virtue’s sister lived in Canada (Eliza A. Rowe) Gladman – At Toronto on Friday, March 12, 1926, Eliza A Rowe, widow of the late Joseph Gladman, in her 86th year, beloved mother of Earland E. of Milwaukee, Wis; George J. of New Westminster, B.C; Albert J of Oakville, Ont; Herbert M, of Newmarket, and Charles G. of Toronto. Service at A. W. Miles Funeral Chapel, 396 College Street, on Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. Interment Port Hope on arrival of morning train Monday from Toronto. Friends kindly omit flowers.
