"Enlisted for the War, or Home Guards."

                       *SYNOPSIS.*

  ACT 1.   Scene:  Home of the Trueworths, Grainlow.  
The selling of the farm.  Hiram Jenks' devotion to Mattie
Trueworth.  Crimp's dislike to Old Jim.  Jenk's opinion of
his son's quotation, " When pole meets pole then comes 
the crack of skull." Mattie's opinion of her suitor. Rowell's
magnanimity.  Proposiition by Rowell.  Rob honorable to 
the last, The arrival of Gaylie Gifford.Crimp's appreciation 
of Jenks' humor. Crimp's appreciation of Jenk's humor.
Gaylie's desire to investigate. Mattie's belief that Hiram
is crazy.  Rob's regiment and his enemy in command,
Gaylie's stand against all treachery and deceit

                             TABLEAU.

 ACT 11.   Scene: Headquarters of Col. Rowell, Virginia.
Rob's soliloquy.  "Halt! Who goes there?" Crimp's arrival 
is disguise, Boxer arrives at Headquarters and discovers
 tobacco smoke.  Rob sees that orders are obeyed.  Gen.
Grant is ordered to put out his cigar. Rob questioned by 
Grant.  Boxer's recommend of Rob.  Grant's approval of 
Rob.  Rowell appears; his desire that Rebel bullets might
strike Rob.  Rowell inspects the mail.  Gaylie's letter to
Rob detained.  Rob sees Rowell place the letter in his 
pocket.  Rowell discovers a letter from Gaylie addressed 
to himself.  Rob relieves guard and speaks with the Col  
Mattie's letter delivered to him.  He accuses the Col. of 
intercepting hs letters. Col hands him the letter which 
Gaylie has written to him entreating him to return to 
Grainlow.  Rob fears Gaylie's trust.  He demands Rowell 
to give him is letter from Gaylie; Rowell shoots.  Crimp 
appears from his concealment just in time to strike
Rowell's arm, and the pistol is discharged in the air.
Crimp delivers Gaylie's letter.  Rob taken to the Guard 
House. Grant offers his servies to Rob, should it come to
trial.

                             TABLEAU

ACT 111.    Scene: Parlor in Gaylie Gifford's house.  Mrs.
Trueworth and Mattie converse on the return of Rob.  Mrs. 
Trueworth's doubt of Gaylie's affection for Rob.  Mattie's 
opinion of Gaylie, and her dislike for the jealous pretens-
ions of Hiram.  She threatens to cure him of his folly.
Crimps excitment at the return of the soldiers, "Hallelujum,
Babylum am fallen! Johnny am marchen home double
quick"  Mrs. Trueworth's desire for the regal roles of a 
queen to receive her boy.  Rowell pretends love to Mattie.
Hiram, embarassed, accures Mattie of coquetry, then seeks
reconciliation, but is refused.  Crimp calls Hiram to witness
the skyr technicks.  Tete-a-tete between Gaylie and Col. 
Rowell-Mrs. Trueworth discovers them while Rowell is impor-
tuning Gaylie for her answeer.  Jenks delivers Rowell's mail.  
Hiram secretly gives Gaylie a letter from Rob.  Gaylie sus-
pects Jenks.  Hiram, a great money maker and money sav-
er, releases his father from the clutches of Rowell.  Trueworth
farm sold to Hiram Jenks.  Reconcilation between Hiram and 
Mattie.  "Hark!" distant chorus, "Marching through Georgia,"
The soldiers returning.  "At last! at last!"  Gaylie's answer to 
Rowell, " No, for I detest you."  Rob arrives and Gaylie is true 
to him.  Col. Rowell is in the market-"Oh, what a fool I've been,
the girl has out-witted me."  Gaylie's statement-"If her hero is 
satisfied with her, she will never regret having enlisted for the war.
