Norman L. "Bud" Stokes
Norman L. "Bud" Stokes, 79, of Goreville, died at 2:30am Wednesday Oct. 31, 2001, at the Marion Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 26, 1922, in Goreville. He was the son of John B. and Minnie P. (BILLINGSLEY) Stokes. He was united in married to Zelma Faye Pritchett on Feb. 25, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, MO. She survives. Other survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Fred Cato of Goreville, Donna & Gary Draper of Elgin, Sandra and Marvin Powles of Mill Creek, Dorothy and Valgene Johnson of Goreville, Fran and Pete Francis of Goreville, Ruby and Rick Francis of Goreville; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ludene Johnson of Crab Orchard; one brother, Kenneth Stokes of Grand Chain; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Anne Stokes, one great-grandson, two great-granddaughters, one brother, John Raymond Stokes, and two sisters, Lena Cain and Alice Faye Stokes. He retired in 1979 from the Anna State Hospital, where he had been employed as a psychiatric aide. Following his retirement, he worked for approximately five years as a bus driver for the Goreville School System. He had also worked as a night watchman at Southern Illinois Stone Co. He was a U. S. Army Air veteran, having served during World War II, he enjoyed farming, was an avid horse enthusiast and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. Funeral services were at 2pm Saturday at the Busby Chapel Church, south of Goreville. Dr. Ron Ferguson officiated. Burial was in the Cana Cemetery. Military graveside rites were accorded by the Carroll P. Foster VFW Post of Anna. Memorials can be made to the Cerebral Palsy Association of Southern Illinois, No. 9. Cusamano Professional Plaza, Mount Vernon, IL. 62864, in honor of Brooklyn Francis, Mr. Stokes' great-granddaughter. Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna was in charge of arrangements.
