Miller Cemetery

Lower Cache Township
Johnson County, IL

Miller Cemetery is located in a grove of trees atop a hill situated on the south side of the West Eden Road, approximately one mile west of Belknap in Lower Cache Township
Johnson County, IL.  The cemetery  is unfenced and is in extremely poor condition with broken and scattered tombstones due to tree growth and grazing cattle.

Miller Cemetery was first recorded by Zelda Mathis, Vivian Hester and Truseal H. Kean in 1977.  From their data, it appears that the Miller Cemetery was first used as early as 1852, and
was last used in 1944.  The 1977 recording included tombstones for 46 burials.  A June 1999 visit to the Miller Cemetery by Rebel L. Kreklow and Carolyn J. (Huckelberry) Jones uncovered three previously unrecorded tombstones, and it is believed that additional unrecorded tombstones may be waiting to be recovered.  Based on the 1977 survey, the three new tombstones, and
a review of the Johnson County Death Records covering the period 1878 to the early 1900s, it appears that there are at least 106 persons (including at least 5 Civil War soldiers) buried in
Miller
Cemetery
.  Since burials did not begin in Belknap Fraternal Cemetery until circa 1906, Miller Cemetery probably served as the principal cemetery for citizens in and around the Belknap area prior to the opening of the Belknap Fraternal Cemetery.  As such, there may be more burials in Miller Cemetery than have been accounted for to date.
