Elbert Smoot

Elbert F. "Bill" Smoot, son of Thomas Smoot & Cora (Taylor) Smoot, was born December 11, 1908 in Simpson Township (Johnson County) Illinois. He departed this life Friday evening, June 27, 2003 at 11 PM at the Hardin County General Hospital in Rosiclare, Illinois. At the time of his passing, Elbert had attained the age of 94 years 6 months & 16 days.

Elbert was united in marriage to Margaret (Fleming) on December 21, 1935 in Paducah, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on December 17, 1980.

Survivors include: a Daughter - Peggy Jean Smoot of rural Vienna, IL; 2 Nieces - Pat & Nedra; 2 Nephews - Jim & Bob; a Dear Friend - Henry Mallow of Herrin, IL; his Caregiver for the past 6 1/2 years, Rosie Longworth; and his extended family of resident & staff at the Pope County Care Center in Golconda, IL, where he had resided for the past 5 1/2 years.

In addition to his Parents & Wife, Elbert was preceded in death by a Sister.

Elbert was a lifelong farmer. He had worked as a spot checker in the 32 southernmost counties of Illinois for the A.S.C.S. (Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service).

Elbert was a 60+ year member of Gurney Masonic Lodge # 778 AF&AM. He was of the Presbyterian faith. Elbert enjoyed fishing & traveling.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, June 30, 2003, at 1 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery.
Friends may call after 4 PM Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Masonic rites will be accorded at 7 PM Sunday by the Gurney Masonic Lodge AF&AM.
