(1) 1 Jacob Hooker
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Birth: abt 1751, North Carolina
Death: 1828, Randolph Co. NC
Occ: Farmer
Jacob and brother Robert owned adjoining farm land on the “Cedar Fork of Back Crick” Randolph Co, NC. “On modern maps this shows their property to be a few miles north & west of Asheboro, Randolph, Co. NC”
Jacob obtained 200 acres of land in Randolph Co. NC on February 8, 1802 for 30 Shillings for each hundred acres as per Land Grant Documents provided by Linda Hedlund. FHL Film #19633 - Deeds, Randolph Co., NC - V.9 - 10
Suspicions are that Robert & Jacob were supporters of the British in the Revolutionary War. They were required to take an “Oath of Aliegience” in 1781 according to Randolph County Genealogical Journal
Robert had 150 Acres
Email From Linda Hedlund:
Descendants of Robert Hooker
In 1790 ROBERT and his brother Jacob lived on adjoining farms in Randolph County. Efforts to trace the parentage of these HOOKER brothers have thus far met with little success. ROBERT'S first son Odam, was obviously given the maiden name of his mother, and there were in counties near Randolph a number of families of this surname. But marriage records in North Carolina are exceedingly scarce. And few of the Odams (Odums) left wills. Without a marriage record or a deed giving land to a married daughter, a will is the only way a daughter can be traced after her marriage. Because both of these HOOKER brothers named a son Odam, it is believed that they married sisters, HANNAH and Sarah Odam (or Odum, as the name was sometimes spelled). A slight clue to the father of the HOOKERS may be that both brothers also named a son William, but no William Hooker has been found who left a will naming sons Robert and Jacob.
In 1793 ROBERT HOOKER received a land grant of 150 acres on "Cedar Fork of Black Crick", but in 1801 he sold part of this and in 1808 gave power of attorney for selling the rest of the land, "because I am about to move to the Western Country". When this part was sold in 1810, he identified himself on the deed as "ROBERT HOOKER of Clark County, Indiana." This was where he was living when his daughter married Thomas Nicholson two years later.
****************************************************************
NOTE: I don't feel at all that just because there first son was named Odom that the mothers maiden name was Odom. Also, Robert owned land on the Back Crick, not Black.
****************************************************************
Robert Hooker was born about 1755 it is believed in North Carolina. The first record I have found his name in was the 1781 Randolph County, NC Court of Common Pleas and Quarter Sessions. The record reads:
" Cranford Rush and Robert Hooker charged with having joined the British and bound to this Court appeared and discharged and took the Oath of Allegiance."
In Land Entries 1783 - 1795 of Randolph Co., NC, I find the following:
"Robert Hooker enters 150 acres on the Cedar fork of Back crick beginning at stake on south corner joining Joseph Reding & John Pricketts line & running for compliment. June the 14th 1793."
On the modern maps this show his property to be a few miles north and west of Asheboro, Randolph Co., NC.
************************************************
The only thing I saw that you might not have was a reference to Robert Hooker having 150 acres, 2 horses and 9 cattle in the 1779 tax list. He was in Wm. Coles List of taxpayers and value was 170 .
(This was in a card catalog)
Sent by Jeanie Anderson who did a little research for me when she went to North Carolina.

Bill of complaint (9 April 1804) by Frederick DAWSON, constable, that Robert HOOKER assaulted him in the execution of his office at John MOSS' home, 7 April. Thomas SAXTON was surety for HOOKER's appearance. A complaint was also lodged against Adam (Odum) HOOKER on the same charges.
Presentment (May 1804) of Odum HOOKER on a charge that he assaulted John MOSS, 20 April w/Frederick DAWSON.
Presentment (May 1804) Robert HOOKER for an assult upon Frederick DAWSON, 10 April 1804, a justice of the peace, while executing his office. Adam or Odum HOOKER was also charged in this incident.

According to an affidavit provided by Bruce Hooker from the National Archives written by Lydia Short, Hendersons wife dated December 17,1885 as a claim for war pension benefits, Lydia writes about Hendersons return from the Civil War and how he became crazy and eventually hung himself due to post war stress. In the affidavit it lists the birth dates for all her children. I talks about how Henderson became sick during the war and how he tried to kill her on several occasions. He tried several times to kill himself by taking poison but was unsuccessful.
In Another affidavit for Pension signed by friend and soldier John Viking Smith, dated December 29, 1885, indicates that Henderson became crazy after participating in the Stoneman Raids in Georgia, during the Battle for Atlanta July/August 1864 as part of the Battle of Dandridge. Historical Reports indicate that the 14th Regiment participated in the Raid on Macon, Ga. Shortly after the regiment got split up, Stoneman surrendered his command and 700 were captured. The others made it back to the Union lines but not before being chased by Rebels, land owners and dogs. Henderson was taken to a field hospital in Marieta, Ga suffering from dysentary but was never the same after the raids and later released in November 1864, sent home on a medical leave in April 1865 and subsequently given a medical disability discharge for problems with the lungs due to exposure during his time in service.
A report from a local newspaper on the account of Henderson Death reads as follows:

At Vienna, Ill., Henderson Hooker suicided by hanging. His wife discovered him before life was extinct and held him up until her strength became exhausted, when she was compelled to let him drop and go after help, or a knife to cut the rope. When she returned he was dead.
