WELCOME TO THE ILLINOIS
GENEALOGY TRAILS WEBSITE
FOR
JOHNSON COUNTY
I'm Nan Starjak, your host for Johnson
County.
My
ggg/grandfather, Hezekiah Lambert, came to Johnson County from
Tennessee, by way of Kentucky, in late 1850.
A few years later another ggg/grandfather arrived:
Cyrus Burns, originally from South Carolina.
Hezekiah's son married Cyrus' daughter . . .
and the rest,
as they say, is history
genealogy!
The
purpose of this site is to make free genealogy and history available
for Johnson County researchers.
I will be transcribing and posting new data as fast as possible.
If
you have material
you would like to contribute, or suggestions for the site,
please email me.

History
Johnson County, located in the
southern tip of Illinois, was created in 1812 out of Randolph County.
It was named for
Richard
M. Johnson, a congressman from Kentucky. Johnson served in
the
Army in the War of 1812. He later went on to be Vice
President of the United States for one term, under President Martin Van
Buren. He died in 1850, shortly after winning
re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives.
The original area of Johnson County included the present counties of
Alexander, Johnson, Massac, Pulaski, and Union, as well as
parts of Jackson, Pope, Saline, and Williamson counties.
The county seat has been Vienna since 1818. |
