Jewell Ruth McMahan

Jewell Ruth Cavitt McMahan was born April 23, 1911 at the family home site
north of Tunnel Hill to John G. and May Laughlin Cavitt.
She departed this life Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at the home of her daughter
in Crainville. At the time of her passing, Jewell had attained the
age of 95 years 1 month & 15 days.
Ruth married Otis Alma McMahan on April 6, 1940 in Jackson, Missouri. He
preceded her in death on April 11, 1994.
Survivors include: a Son – Earl Ray McMahan; a Daughter – Mary Evelyn
Horsley; 2 Grandchildren – Andrea Hancock & her husband Tad; Timothy
Horsley & his wife Kristin; 1 Great Granddaughter – Leslie Hancock; a
Sister-in-Law – Imogene McMahan; Special Nieces – Lu Queen and Mary Lou
McHugh. As well as many Friends, Relatives and former students.
In addition to her Parents & Husband, she was preceded in death by: 3
Brothers – August (Gus) Cavitt, Bryan Cavitt & Raymond Cavitt; 3 adult
Sisters – Nora Jackson, Oma Lee Faulkner & Ann Grannan; 3 infant Sisters –
Ollie, Ethel & Bertha.
Ruth was a Vienna High School class of 1930. She enjoyed reading, word
puzzles & crossword puzzles. Ruth was a member of Community of Christ
(Webb) Church near Tunnel Hill. She taught 31 years in schools in Johnson
County – primarily Webb School (until its closing) and Vienna Grade
School. She retired in 1970. Ruth was a member of the Johnson County
Retired Teachers.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Bailey
Funeral Home in Vienna, IL with High Priest Glenn Webb officiating. Burial
will be at Webb Cemetery, near Tunnel Hill, IL. Friends may call from 5:00
to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for “Miss Ruth” may be made to Hospice of
Southern Illinois, 1110 North Johnson, Marion, IL 62959-1665.
