Lemuel Clinton Stewart
Lemuel Clinton Stewart, youngest son of D. D. and Cora Elkins Stewart,
was born May 18, 1910, near Buncombe, Ill. He passed away at the Herrin
Hospital on August 26, 1971.
Lem
was the last member of that family. The mother, father and four
brothers, Lawrence, Otto, Edd D., and Verdie preceded him in death.
He
was born and reared on the farm, homesteaded by his grandfather, James
Stewart, during the presidency of Franklin Pierce. Lem owned the farm
at the time of his death and had spent his lifetime caring for it. He
also did sheep shearing for a number of years and was a heavy equipment
operator.
On
August 10, 1933, he was married to Pauline Kerr. They were the parents
of Mrs. Robert (Bertha Mae) Dismukes of Metropolis and Mrs. Gene (Cora
Sue) Sams of Mt. Carmel.
In
October 1946, Lem accepted Christ as his personal Saviour, became a
member and trustee of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was ever faithful
in attendance there.
Lem
offers his last testimony to relatives and friends through the songs he
requested to be sung today, “Blessed Redeemer”, crucified on Calvary’s
Mountain, providing the conditions whereby “Ye Must Be Born Again”.
Then the assurance comes that we too, may dwell in a land “Where We
Shall Never Grow Old.”
Today he is laid to rest, as many of his ancestors have been, in Mt.
Zion Cemetery, just across the road from his homeplace.
Those
surviving him are his wife, Pauline, daughters, Bert and Sue,
sons-in-law, Robert Dismukes and Gene Sams; grandchildren, Paula Sue and
Robert Daniel Dismukes; a niece, Mrs. Mae Earl; a nephew Eddie Stewart
and many other relatives and friends.
Peace to the memory of Lemuel C. Stewart.
