Nellie Skelton

Nellie Lavada Skelton, daughter of James Betts & Rachel Adeline (Holmes) Betts, was born April 12, 1908 in the Ballowe Community in Johnson County Illinois. She departed this life Saturday morning, July 19, 2003 at 9:35 AM at the Hillview Health Care Center in Vienna, IL. At the time of her passing, Nellie had attained the age of 95 years 3 months & 7 days.

Nellie was united in marriage to William Horace Skelton on April 19, 1925 at the Massac County Courthouse in Metropolis, IL. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1979.

Survivors include: a Daughter – Hazel Spencer & her husband James, of Yorkville, IL; a Son – Dale Skelton & his wife Annette, of Vienna, IL; 2 Granddaughters – Debra McCartney & her husband Greg, of Yorkville, IL & Lisa Hennessy & her husband Patrick, of West Chicago, IL; 6 Great Grandchildren – Rachel, Drew, Scott, Jordan, Brooke, & Paige; Several Nieces & Nephews.

In addition to her Parents & Husband, Nellie was preceded in death by: 2 Brothers – Edmund & Dave Betts; a Sister – Edna Betts; Half Brothers & Sisters – Frank, Alford, Alonzo, Donald, Frank, Cindy, Amanda, & Mae.

Nellie was a Homemaker. She was a member of the Ballowe General Baptist Church were she had served as the secretary & treasurer. Nellie had also been a Sunday School teacher. Nellie enjoyed quilting, gardening, & cooking.
Nellie leaves her family & many friends to cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be held Monday morning, July 21, 2003 at 11 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, IL. Rev. Steve Lindsay will officiate. Burial will be in the Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 PM Sunday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, IL.
