James Levi Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Baker was born in Johnson county on May 21, 1879 and life made its exit on Nov. 11, 1938, age 59 years, 5 months and 20 days. His life was made up mostly of rural activities. His pleasure in life was caring for his farm and domestic animal's that seemed to have a distinctive understanding for their master. On March 7, 1907, he entered the holy bond of matrimony with Lula Hill, and to their home came the blessing of two children, Albert Lee, who had his Heavenly call in infancy and Pauline, who grieves with her mother at their inexplainable loss. In manhood he became acquainted with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and became affiliated with the Baptist church at Grantsburg, where he attended church as long as he remained in that community. His membership remained with this church until it was transferred to that eternal land of rest and peace. Mr. Baker lived a quiet life, away from the hurry and scurry of man ever finding something to keep him employed on his farm north of Simpson. The great hills, covered with beautiful trees which encircled his farm were doubtless his untiring friends and who knows how often he communed with nature to have a direct understanding of God. Several years of his life were spent in California, but the call of the wilds of Southern Illinois, was too strong to resist and he returned to his farm where he truly liked to live. He was an individual who attended to his own affairs and left the business of his friends alone, unless called upon for assistance, when he always responded cheerfully, eveready to help those in need. He was a worthy member of the Modern Woodmen Lodge of Simpson and his call leaves another vacancy amid the brotherhood. On the morning of his passing, he felt that life's trail was near an end and expressed to his loved ones his faith in a God who never foresakes his own and the Heavenly home he was going to. He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife, a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Stout, and grandson, Eugene Stout of Holtville, Calif., five sister, Mrs. Ida Anderson of Zanesville, Ohio; Mrs. Frank Dater of Simpson; Mrs Ezra Trovillion of Grantsburg; Mrs.Altie Ward of Chicago; Mrs. Miranda Smith of Marmaduke, Ark, two brothers, Chester Baker of Ottawa, Ill., W.T. Baker of Marmaduke, Ark., with a host of other relatives and friends, who are grieved at his passing. |
