John Paul Benson

John Paul Benson, 81 of Goreville, died at 2:50 a.m. Sunday, July 7, 1991 at Marion Memorial Hospital.
    Mr. Benson was born at Goreville on March 23, 1910 to John Sidney and Roberta (Lowry) Benson.  He married Nadine Underwood on July 20, 1931 at Salem, Ark.
    He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II and retired as director of the Air Force Training Film Library.  A member of the National Rifleman's Association, Mr. Benson was a gun collector and an avid sailboat enthusiast.  He attended the Goreville Methodist Church.
    Survivors include wife, Nadine of Goreville; three grandchildren, Kevin John Benson of Goreville, Kristi Jean O'Brien of Downers Grove and Kimberly Theresa Benson of Shiloh; great-grandson Alan John O'Brien of Downers Grove; daughter-in-law, Theresa Mary Benson of Shiloh; two sisters, Helen Underwood and Elsa Heninger, both of Goreville.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Alan G. Benson.
    Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9 at Goreville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pete Vinson and the Rev. Virgil Elmore officiating.
    Burial was in Chapman Cemetery, Goreville, where military services were conducted by Heyde Pillow Post 1301, Marion.
    Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southern Illinois Chapter, P.O. Box 4003, Carbondale, Ill. 62902.
    Meredith Funeral Chapel in Goreville were in charge of arrangements.
