Mary C. Scott

The death angel has claimed another victim and loving mother in Flatwoods, Mrs. Mary C. Scott answering the final call, departed this life near 11 o’clock Tuesday night, Nov. 18, 1919, at the age of 81 years, 11 months, 29 days. Her passing out was a great shock to
her many relatives and friends, as her sickness was short and very quiet-only about thirty-four hours, not seeming to be serious but five or ten minutes before death.  She was strong
enough to handle herself and seemedin her right mind until the end, so the physician didn’t arrive until she had passed away.
Mrs. Scott was the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca Kerley, was born December 19, 1837, in Tennessee, arriving in Illinois at the
age of 1 year, and lived in this neighborhood the most of her life.  She was married to Sygessman Scott, July 13, 1857; to this union seven children were born, three children
passing away some years ago; also her husband   preceded her to the Great Beyond Feb. 10, 1904, leaving four children to mourn her departure, namely: Rebecca Ross,
Whelen Springs, Ark.; Jamie Ragain, Frances Scott, Pope County;  Mindozia Simmons, of Johnson County.  Two brothers, Francy
Kerley, of Pope county and Allen Kerley, of Simpson, fourteen grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. Aunt Mary, as we
called her, was an attentive housewife and a loving mother. By the help of her husband she raised four orphan children.  She professed a
hope in Jesus Christ in 1876, never united with any church, but was a believer in church work and education.  After the death of her husband she made her home with her son (Francy)
in the old home place, until the last year, was staying with Jamie Ragain when the summons came which removes the head of what has been for years one of the best known of
her family and will be greatly missed, but as she passed over to meet her Savior and loved ones, she is not dead but sleepeth and is like a star which passes out of sight and rises to shine in another hemisphere.
After short services by Rev. W. N. Rodgers and C.O.Kerley in presence of a good crowd Wednesday evening she was laid to rest in Kerley cemetery to await the resurrection morning.
