Raleigh Peterson
Funeral services were held Sunday morning July 28, at 10:30 o’clock for
Raleigh Peterson at Buzbee Chapel, Goreville’s south side Free-Will
Baptist church. Rev. Cripe, the pastor conducted the services. Young
men friends of Raleigh acted as pall bearers and the beautiful floral
pieces were born by a number of his girl friends. The Wilson quartet
rendered the musical numbers. Burial followed in the cemetery adjoining
the church.
The
following brief obituary was read:
We
see our friends and loved ones all journeying along the way of life.
Some, grown old and weary, goaded by hope. Others, marching in youth’s
proud vigor, led by aspiration. To each of us there looms in the
distance a parting of the ways. But the road goes eternally on—to one
side the dark way of earthly struggle and to the other the sublime and
lighted path of heavenly glory. We grieve for one in youth, whose
presence we know no more.
Raleigh Peterson, son of Richard and Ida (Humphrey) Peterson, was born
near Buncombe, Illinois, January 12, 1917; passed away at the home of
his parents, July 26, 1935, age 18 years, 6 months and 14 days. He was
one of a family of seven. Three brothers and three sisters survive,
namely: Claud Peterson of Buncombe, Mrs. Eula Iice of West Frankfort,
Lee Peterson of Greenville, Mrs. Velma Wooley of Sullivan, and Jewel and
Laverne at home.
In
addition to the immediate family, many other relatives and friends have
felt the passing to Raleigh as a sad and untimely blow.
He
had attended the Buncombe school until a few years ago and since had
been employed on the farm of his father.
The
long night comes; the voice we knew
Is
hushed in slumber deep
Till
some glad morn will wake anew
Our
boy who only sleeps.
