ST. CHARLES CITY DIRECTORY

St. Charles.....
This incorporated Town is also on both sides of the Fox River, and is the third in size of Kane County, numbering about four thousand inhabitants. It is pleasant, and a considerable business is carried on here with the farmers of the surrounding well settled country. Here are two Flour mills, and also two Paper mills, owned by Messrs. Butler & Hunt. There is also an Iron foundry and Machine shop, and a Reaper and Mower manufactory, of John T. Whitaker & Co., who are also Agricultural Implement makers, and Steam Engine manufacturers.

St. Charles was laid out in 1837, by Messrs. Minard, Ferson and Hunt, who settled here the year previous, erecting log houses, and opened the first store in July, 1837. A school and a post office was opened in 1838, Horace Bancroft being the first postmaster. A damn across the river was erected by the aforesaid gentlemen, in 1837, at an expense of two thousand dollars, making a very large water power, and being on a rocky foundation, as are all the mills, the structures are all substantial and durable.

The site of this town is a gradual elevation on each side of the river, making the views from the dwellings extensive and pleasant, while the stores, which are numerous and well-appointed, supply all the wants of the neighborhood. Large quantities of grain and other produce are shipped at this point, which may be expected largely increase, as the County still progresses in population and development of its resources.

This place also enjoys all the Religious and Educational advantages of a well settled and prosperous community, there being several substantial Churches and School Houses, together with other institutions of a social character.
