


The 46th Infantry Illinois Volunteers was organized at Camp Butler, IL, Dec. 28, 1861, by Col. John N. Davis. Ordered to Cairo, IL Feb. 11, 1862. From thence, via Cumberland river to Fort Donelson, TN, arriving on the 14th, and assigned to command of Gen. Lew Wallace. 1th moved through the works and to Dover. 19th moved to Henry. Mar. 16, embarked for Pittsburg Landing, where it arrived on the 18th. The Regiment was now in the Second Brigage and Fourth Division. In the battle of Shiloh, Apr 6 and 7, the 46th took a most conspicuous and honorable part, losing over half of it officers and men, in killed and wounded. Was engaged in the siege of Corinth in May. Aug. 27, 1862, while camping near Memphis, engaged in the scout to Pigeon Roost, Oct. 5, 1862, met the enemy and had battle near Metamora, while moving from the atchie river toward Corinth.
Apr 21 1863, while at Memphis the second time, engaged in the expedition to Hernando and returned 24th. May 13,embarked for Vicksburg, and on the 15th landed at Youngs Point. 18th marched to Bowen's Landing. 19th moved to Sherman's Landing. 20th moved, by steamer, up Yazoo, to Chickasaw Bayou. May 21 preceded to the left of Gen. Grant's Army. 24th marched in the direction of Vicksburg. 25th marched to the extreme left of the line. The regiment was detailed on picket duty, and during the night, the outpost, consisting of five companies, were captured by the enemy. 104 men and 7 officers were cap- tured, 70 escaping.
The remainder of the regiment took an active part in the siege of Vicksburg. July 12, in the siege of Jackson, moved into position at extreme right of line. Engaged in the siege until the 16th, when the enemy evacuated Jackson, after which the regiment returned to Vicksburg. Aug. 8, moved to Natchez. Returned on the 8th.
Jan. 4, 1864, the 46th was mustered as a Veteran Regiment. 12th, started north and the 23rd arrived at Freeport, IL, where the regiment was furloughed
