Fireman Crushed to Death and Nine Passengers Injured, Several Quite Seriously. Alton Ill. Jan 25 - Rushing along a too great speed to be checked when the danger was seen, an engine and combination car on the Illinois Terminal railroad crashed into an engine on a sideing, but projecting over the main track near Alton. Addison ? Chaplin a fireman, was killed, nine persons were cut and bruised and 45 passangers were badly shaken up by the collision. the engine and combination car were precipitated into a shallow ditch and slid on the ice and snow thirty feet. The accident was caused by an engine in charge of Engineer Thomas Maloney extending over a siding. The seriously injured are; Moses Rubenstein, Alton: hips and back badly cut by broken glass. Col. J. J. Brenholt, Alton: left leg badly cut and bruised. L.L. Pitcoe, Chicago: seriously cut about head and body. Back to Madison County Main Page. |
