Early Land Claims

There are four types of claims:

1. those from ancient grants or allotments from former
governments or the Indians.

2. grant of land of a donation of 400a to each family in the
county before the treaty with England in 1783

3. Those who have improved the land in the county, under a
supposed grant of the court.

4 . Those having been enrolled on 1 Aug 1790 and done duty in
the militia

1 and 2 were under the act of 20 Jun 1778. 3 and 4 where under the act of 03 Mar 1791. There were no confirmed grants under #1, and a few under #2. Quite a few were under #3 and most were under #4. Present owners were the parties who owned the land as of 31 Dec 1809.



These claims fall under #3

Claim 1865--original Alexis Buyatte, presently Nicholas Jarrott, 400a. Land on the river l'Abbe (Cahokia Creek) 9 miles above Cahokia. The calim is actually on the Mississippi Rr in T 3-10, near Kinder Station and opposite Cabaret Island.

Claim 526--original James Biswell, present heirs, 400a. Land on Buck Run, branch of Kaskaskia Rr. SW corner of T3-7 running into St Clair Co.

Claim 519--original Alexander Denis, present William Bolin Whitesides, 400a. Land on Winn's Run in St Clair Co, beginning at a white walnut near Cummin's Sugar Camp. T4-8 Sec 20, on the bluffs of the AMerican Bottom, part of the Goshen Settlement.

Claim 561--original Samuel Worley, present Clement Drury (heir of Samuel), 400a. Land below the Narrows, below Hull's Stattion, adjoining the patented militia rights of Samuel Worley and James McNabb. Mostly in Sec 6 T3-9 and includes the farm of Samuel Squire

Claim 1844--original Jacque Germain, present Nicholas Jarrot, 400a. Land at the l'Abbe, thirteen miles ablove Cahokia. Sec 32 T3-9 on the borders of Horse Shoe Lake.

Claim 133--original Jean Baptiste Gonville, AKA Rappellay, present Nicholas Jarrott, 400a. Land at Canteen, 10 miles above Cahokia. This claim includes the monastery of the Minks of LaTrappe--Monks Mound.  Located in Sec 35 and 36 of T3-9

Claim 1883--original Joseph Hanson, present Nicholas Jarrot, 400a. Land at Marais Mensoui, this is in Sec 26 of T3-9 on the borders of Horse Shoe Lake.

Claim 637--original James Kinkead, present James Kinkead by George H Dougherty, 400a. Land in the Mississippi bottom 4 or 5 miles above the ferry opposite St Louis, MO. Sec 25 and 26 in T3-10, about 2 miles north of Venice.

Claim 1855--original Baptiste Lionais, present Nicholas Jarrot, 400a, Land opposite the mouth of the Missouri Rr. Most of this claim ahs been washed away by the Missouri Rr. The landing of the Madison Co Coal Co is on what remains of the claim in Sec 32 T5-9.

Claim 902--original Lsaac Levy, present Isaac Darneille, 400a. Land on the river l'Abbe about 12 miles north of Cahokia near where the French church stood. Most of this claim is in St Clair Co, the part in Madison Co is in Sec 34 and 35 T 5-9, close to Canteen Village.

Claim 1838--original Michel Pichette, present Nicholas Jarrot, 400a on the l'Abbe, 8 miles north of Cahokia. Sec 31 T 3-9

Claim 1653--original Isaac West, present, I West, 400a. Testimony for claim given by George Atcheson and David Waddle, land which was improved was in the survey made by James Pigott. Alexander Waddle and Amos Squire state the survey was in about 1802 and in the place where West now lives. Sec 19 of T3-8.

The only claim to fall under #2:

Claim 527--Original James Biswell, present hisheirs. This claim joins claim 526 above.

Claims under #4, militia service, land grant of 100a:

Claim 1869--original Jean Brugier, present Nicholas Jarrot. This claim is located together with Claim 1880 of Louis Menard and others. In T4-9 just north of Madison, now mostly under the Mississippi.

Claim 1324--original Mathew Rene, present James Haggin. Land on the head waters of Judy's Creek, Sec 222 and 23 T4-8, about 2 miles south of Edwardsville.

Claim 338 a--original Louis Bibo or Biboux, present Samuel Judy. (there were 4 claims together)Loacted in Sec 32 and 33 T4-8. Samuel Judy est in 1800, there is an orchard and a brick house, built in 1811, on the property.

Claim 605--original Louis Bison, present Isom Gillham. Loacted at the SW corner of Samuel Judy's property, Sec 5 T3-8

Claim 2603--original George Biggs, present John Whitesides. Located on Wood River, includes a mill. Also includes the former site of the town of Milton in Sec 17 T5-9. Also covers part of claim 2056.

Claim 98--original Jean Beaulieu, present Nichloas Jarrot. Located on Cahokia Creek, near the mouth of Indian Creek in Sec 7 and 8 T4-8. There was a mill there

Claim 1258 a--original Francois Campeau, present John Rice Jones. This location includes the claims of Pierre Martin Jr, JB Raplais, Jacque Mulott, Louis Harmond, Joseph Poirier, Dennis Lavertue, Philip de Boeuf, James Lamarch, and Constant Longtemps. Located between Grand Isle and Preque Isle opposite the Isle of Cattarot. On the survey it is in Sec 1 and 12 T3-10.

Claim 485 a--original Pierre Clement, present John Briggs. Located on the bank of the Mississippi adjoining the Cahokia Common. Surveyed with Antoine Labusceir's Claim. Sec 36 of T3-10

Claim 752--original Francois Deneme, present John Bloone/Bloom. Loacted on Cantten Creek Part lies in Sec 31 and 32 of T3-8, the rest is in St CLair Co.

Claim 754--original JB Derousse St Pierre, present John Bloom. Loacred next to survey of Etienne Pincenoe/Pencenneau. Most likely on Sec 35 or 36 T3-10.

Claim 1258 2d--original Jean B Giranad alias Jen Pierre, presnt John Rice Jones. Affirmed by Jones to Thomas Gilham. Locted in Goshen adjoining Samuel Judy ad Isham/Isom Gilham. In Sec 4 and 5 T3-8

Claim 1258 b--original Louis Harmond, present John Rice Jones. See claim 1258 a

Claim 115--original Charles Hebert alias Cadien, present Nicholas Jarrot. Located with others on the bank of the Mississippi about 2 miles below the mouth of the Mad (? Wood) River. This claim is in Sec 8 And 9 T4-9, but has nearly all been washed away. See Claim 1880.

Claim 338 b--original Jacob Judy, present Samuel Judy. This claim with other claims see 338a.

Claim 1841--original Baptiste Lecompte, present Nicholas Jarrot. In sec 17 T4-9 close to Madison Landing

Calim 1851--original Barzle Lecompte, present Nicholas Jarrot. In front og Claim 1841 includes ste of Madison, 1/3 is washed away.

Claim 338c--original Louis Laflamme, present Samuel Judy. Surveyed with the claims of Louis Bibaux, Francois Ritchie and Jacob Judy. See Claim 338a

Claim 484--original John Lisle, present John Briggs. Located by a stake on the banks of the Mississippi

Claim 485b--original Antoine Labussiere, present John Briggs. See Claim 485a

Claim 991--original Lierre Lejoy, present Thomas Kirkpatrick. Located on Cahokia Creek, 3 (actually 8) miles east of the Mississippi Rr. Sec 2 and # of T5-8, includes the NW part of Edwardsville.

Claim 1880--original Louis Menard, present Nicholas Jarrot. Located with the claims of JB Brugier, Barzel Leconte, Charles Hebert and another to be subsitituted to cover his mill near the mouth of the Wood Rr. Sec 8 of t4-9, and is now mainly washed away.

Claim 517--original Abraham Rain/Rainer, widow and heirs, present Uel and Bolen Whitesides--250a in Sec 20 and 21 T4-9.

Claim 756--original John Sullivan, present Larkin Rutherford--440a, Sec 8 and 9 T5-9. The farm of the Hon Cyrus Edwards is in the claim.

Other notes on claims:

20 Feb 1812 regarding Claim 2056 by John Edgar. This claim was confirmed by Gov St Clair under the claims under improvements act.  It has since been proven that the original owner Jean B Cardinal lived on the land and built a house. He was taken by Indians and his family was forced to abandon the house. They moved to Cahokia Village. Commissoners recommend that it the claim be confirmed to Cardinal or his legal reps., since the title papers of John Edgar do not appear to be regular. Also regarding Claim 2076, original owner, Phillip Gallaghen for 400a. John Edgar claims right for improvements and this claim is derived from a confirmation by Gov Harrison. Claim is in Sec 8 and 17 of T4-8.

24 Feb 1813 regarding Claim 2056 by John Edgar on land obtained from J Baptiste Cardinal at Piasa with the deed dated 17 Sep 1795. It was witnessed by La Violette and acknowledged before William Morrison on 10 Apr 1795. ( seem this is a disbute over the land claim by John Edgar and that Edgar signed as the witness)
