Bernard Bischoff
Bernard Bischoff is Called at the Ripe Age of 85 Years
Bernard Bischoff, one of the pioneer business men and citizens of Collinsville, who for the past 35 years, up to a few years back, was identified with the business interest of the city, in the capacity of a manufacturer of soda water, died at the family home at 203 North Morrison avenue, at 11 p. m. Friday, Oct. 8. He had been bedfast for the past three weeks as a result of ailments incident to his advanced years, but previous to that time was able to be about the city and meet with old friends. He would have been 86 years of age on the first of November, and was born in Germany. When a young man he came to America and settled in the vicinity of Belleville, where he became familiar with the soda water business, and later on established that business in O'Fallon and about 35 years ago came to Collinsville and engaged in the making and selling of soft drinks. He met with great success and became wealthy and some ten years ago retired from the business, but has ever since retained an interest in public affairs and regardless of his advanced years was a most interesting personality and has a large circle of friends whom he delighted to meet and engage in conversation about events of the days that have gone.
His memory was excellent and he recalled anecdotes of former days with zest and with accuracy. There are three living children and eight grandchildren. The children are Henry B. Bischoff of Bunker, MO, Mrs. John Van Arsdale of Collinsville and Mrs. Caroline Ryan, also of Collinsville. The funeral was held Monday, Oct. 11 at 9 a.m. from SS. Peter and Paul's church in this city, and the interment was at the Catholic cemetery. Friends of the family extend to those bereaved their most sincere sympathy in this hour of affliction.

Levi Davis Sr.
3/10/1897

Death of A Pioneer
Mr. Levi Davis Sr. Expires in His 89th Year
Mr. Levi Davis Sr., the venerable retired attorney whose figure on the streets of Alton up to the last few years was a familiar one to nearly everyone, passed peacefully away Wednesday night at the home of his son, Dr. Charles Wise Davis, after a stroke of appoplexy. Last night shortly after retiring for the night he was heard by his grandson to be groaning. After several ineffectual attempts to arouse his grandfather, he summoned the assistance of Dr. Davis. It was evident that the old veteran was dying with appoplexy, superinduced by old age. Death took place at 11:15 p.m..

Levi Davis was a native of Maryland, being born in that state July 20, 1808. He was one of the pioneers in the settlement of the State of Illinois, coming west and settling at Vandalia where he was married in 1832. In his young days he was associated with all the eminent characters of the time, and was prominently identified with the early history of Illinois. For eight years he held the position of State Auditor at the time of the removal of the State Capitol from Vandalia to Springfield. During the life of the Whig party there were few such staunch Whigs as Mr. Davis, and he was one of the many who tried to elevate Henry Clay to the Presidential chair. On the defeat of that candidate he was so filled with disgust that he resolved to never again take an active interest in politics and he never did except to vote. When the Republican party was organized he transferred his allegiance to it, and could always be counted on to support its principles.

He moved to Alton in 1846 where he continued to reside, holding an enviable position as a well read lawyer and most successful in everything he attempted. He was one of the few survivors of the Black Hawk war, during which he saw active service. For a number of years Mr. Davis has been declining rapidly, but was able to be downtown occasionally. Only a few months ago he made a pleasant call at the Telegraph office, and while quite feeble in body, his mind showed his usual brightness. He resided with his son Dr. Davis where he received all the tender care a fond son could give. In the death of Mr. Davis one of the greatest legal lights , and one of the best of Alton's citizens has passed away, leaving a fragrant memory to all who knew him. Mr. Davis leaves a family of three sons: Mr. James Davis, of St. Louis; Dr. Charles Davis and Mr. Levi Davis Jr. of Alton.

Funeral of Mr. Levi Davis

The funeral service of the late Levi Davis was held Friday at 2 o'clock from the home of Dr. Charles Davis on State Street. Rev. W. M. Blackus of the Unitarian Church conducted the services in the presence of a large attendance of friends of the family. A long cortege followed the body to Greenwood Cemetery where it was laid to rest beside that of his wife. The pallbearers were grandsons of Mr. Davis.

Levi Davis III
Obituary, son of Judge Levi Davis

LEVI W. DAVIS AGED LAWYER, DIES
PARALYSIS WAS CAUSE
HAD RECENTLY RETIRED FROM LAW AFTER FIFTY YEARS
WAS FIRST LIEUTENANT IN CIVIL WAR

Levi W. Davis, oldest lawyer in Madison County and for more than a half century a resident of Alton, died Friday night at 10 o¹clock at his residence 410 Belleview Avenue. He was 76 years of age. Paralysis was the cause of Mr. Davis¹ death. He had been in feeble health for some time, but until one week before he died he was able to be up and around. He was stricken with paralysis on Friday of last week and by Sunday had become such
it was deemed necessary to summon his children all of whom were far away. The aged father knowing that the end was near and that his sons wee coming to see him, manifested the most intense eagerness over their coming, and would inquire for his sons frequently, thinking that perhaps they had arrived.

It was evidently his wish to live until all of them could get to his bedside and his wish was gratified. He was able to recognize even the last to arrive, his son Edgar M. Davis, who came from Phoenix, Arizona. With his sons gathered near him, and his wife and daughter there, the aged gentleman was ready to go, and passed peacefully away Friday night.

The death of Levi Davis removes one of the brightest legal minds Alton had among her citizens. He was known as a man of profundity of legal knowledge and without a superior as a counselor at law. He retained considerable
practice even when he became so old that he was no longer physically able to play the part of advocate in court, and it was only when he had completed his fiftieth year of practice of his profession that he closed his office
for the last time and announced that he retired. That was last November on the day that he was celebrating his golden wedding anniversary the announcement was made, though he had informally ceased his practice a short
time before that.

Mr. Davis was born in Springfield, Illinois. He was educated in St. Louis University and later attended Albany law School and the law department of the University of Albany, where he acquired a profound legal education. He did not get his legal education until after he had served in the army during the Civil War and had risen to the rank of a first lieutenant. He was in Company G of the 97th Regiment. His brother James Davis was captain in the same company and another brother Dr. Charles Davis a private, was promoted to Assistant Regimental Surgeon.

The three brothers fought through the remainder of the Civil War together. Two of the brothers survive, Capt. James Davis of St. Louis and Dr. Charles Davis of Alton. On being released from his duties in the army at the close of the war, Mr. Davis took up the study of law. He graduated in the same class at the University of Albany with the late President William McKinley, and his class numbered some other men who rose to distinction later. He was admitted to the practice of law at the Illinois Supreme Court, then at Mount Vernon, Illinois, June 12, 1867.

He was married in Alton October 22, 1868, and ever since then he with his wife lived in Alton. They were a devoted couple all their married life and his partner of more than 50 years of married life has lost a companion whose devotion to her was one of the beautiful features of the neighborhood where they lived.

The death of Mr. Davis is the first in his family in 45 years. He leaves beside his two brothers and his wife, one daughter, Clotilde Davis and five sons, Levi W. Davis of Denver, Edgar M. Davis of Phoenix, Arizona, Charles and Arthur Davis of Chicago and Eugene Davis of Houston, Texas. The funeral of Mr. Davis will be held Monday at 9 o¹clock from SS. Peter and Paul¹s Cathedral. Friends of the family are invited to attend the services at the church, but burial at the cemetery will be private and the family have requested that there be no flowers.

The five sons of Mr. Davis and one of his nephews, Peter Wise, will serve as pallbearers...

Margaret Dierking
MISS DIERKING WILL BE BURIED WEDNESDAY.
Nervous Breakdown Contributes in Young Teacher's Demise.
Funeral services are to be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the First Christian church at East St. Louis for Miss Margaret Dierking whose death occurred yesterday morning after it lingering illness. A short service is to be held at the family residence at 1503 College avenue at 2 o'clock. Miss Dierking's death followed a nervous breakdown from overwork and she had made an extended visit in California in hopes of regaining her health and spent several months at an East St. Louis hospital. Her father recently completed a sun parlor in the family residence where Miss Dierking spent her time the past few weeks.
Seven years ago on next Saturday, the mother of the young lady, who was formerly Miss Elizabeth Betzold, died. Miss Margaret was the oldest of four children and became the "little mother" of the other three. One was a baby of only a few weeks. Miss Dierking took care of the home and children, attended school and prepared to become a school teacher. Her duties increased in the teaching position and the strain became too great. Her health failed and after treatment at home she went to California. The trip was of little benefit.
Miss Dierking was born in East St. Louis on August 10, 1903 and would have observed her 21st birthday next August. Her father is E. A. Dierking, known to a number in Edwardsville. Two brothers and a sister who survive are Eugene and Warren Dierking and Norma Dierking.
Miss Dierking endeavored during the past several years to keep the children in the Sunday school of the First Christian church, a request of her mother. For six years she has been an enthusiastic worker in the Sunday school. Miss Dierking has a number of relatives here.
