Mining News Stories
"A sad accident befell a miner at the coal shaft on Thursday. A car of coal had been raised to the mouth of
the pit and while running it off the cage a lump of coal fell from it down the shaft. Four miners had just stepped
on the cage at the bottom to come up, and on hearing the alarm from above three of them stepped out of danger.
The fourth one, Mr. Taylor, was too late to reach a place of safety, and the mass of coal struck him on the head,
breaking his skull. He lingered unconscious until the following afternoon, when he died.
Mr. Taylor was from Alton and was esteemed by the coal company one of their best men. He leaves a wife and several
children." [Litchfield Union Monitor - Wednesday, 5 May 1875,
