St. Patrick's Cemetery
Known as Greenwood
Upper Alton (or Oakwood)is one ofthe three cemeteries in Alton long designated by wrong names. For years the Alton Cemetery was called "City Cemetery," and today many persons mistakenly still think of it as "City" when in fact it is Alton Cemetery. Similarly, St Patrick's Cemetery, on the Northside, is called Greenwood though it never has borne that name. A settlement on the Northside that antedated North Alton came into being and then was annexed to the City of Alton, the name Greenwood continued, in common use, so far as the cemetery was concerned. To call both cemeteries by their proper names would remove the chance of any confusion between Greenwood and Oakwood. Yet down through the years rarely have two "woods" been confused because newspapers have exercised extreme caution in designating burial places when publishing accounts of funerals. --Alton Evening Telegraph January 11, 1950 (pg. 1)
