Capitola Sarff
Snicarte Cemetery

In September 2008, two men fishing in a creek between Hartsburg and Atlanta, Illinois found the stone of little Capitola Sarff. They removed it from the creek and brought it home, where the wife of one of the men, Natalie Garrison, began researching the name to try and find where the stone belonged. Natalie discovered that Capitola was the daughter of Jackson and Emily Wyatt Sarff, and that she was buried in Snicarte Cemetery, in Mason County. With the help of Mason Co resident Judy Hofreiter she was able to contact members of the Sarff family, who confirmed this information, and stated that the stone had been missing from the cemetery since at least the early 1990's. As Capitola's stone was found about 60 miles upstream from Snicarte Cemetery, it is assumed that it was stolen from the cemetery and then dumped in the creek in Logan County. The Garrison's plan to return the stone to Snicarte Cemetery where the family will reset it in it's proper place.
