The Fort Massac Museum is located at 1308 E. 5th St. in Metropolis, IL just off HWY 45 inside Ft. Massac State Park. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. fall and winter, and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the spring and summer. The museum is open seven days a week. Visitors can tour the museum alone or with the assistance of the interpreter, Sheila Richey McCree. Items representing the life of the the soldiers in the 1750's are the principle interests in the museum. There are also copies of old documents of the Lewis and Clark Expedition era. A historical video is also available for viewing. The museum has a Living History of the 1750's era every month. Each February they have a Civil War re-enactment of the 131st IL Infantry, who were stationed at the Fort for a short period of time. On May 27, 28, and 29, 2000 they sponsor a French and Indian War re-enactment. The annual Ft. Massac Encampment held on the the third weekend in October attracts thousands of visitors. On December 10, 2000 they will have an "Old Time Christmas" which co-insides with the Living History. They will have 1700's music and decorations, and cookies will be prepared from recipes of that time period. Admission to the museum and their activities is free.
