Community of Ellsworth History

The stations of Ellsworth and Padua in this township [Dawson] were located on this road. Ellsworth took its name in honor of Oliver Ellsworth, but is located on land donated by Jonathan Cheney and A. B. Ives. From 1885 for 20 years the Old Settlers' society held its annual meetings at Betser park, south of Ellsworth. Ellsworth's population is 262. ["Official souvenir program, McLean County Centennial, Aug. 27, 28, 30, 1930" by: McLean County Illinois Centennial Souvenir Program Committee, Harold Lang and Eugene Funk] Principal community of Dawson Township, east of Bloomington, is the incorporated village of Ellsworth, which in 1950 had a population of 199. It is situated on the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad and contains several lofty grain elevators at the rail side. The village has a postoffice as well as several retail stores and automobile and other service establishments. The township in which it is located, Dawson, has a total population of 870.
