Slavery News

19 Aug 1857 - The Mattoon Gazette which has already distinguished itself by being the first paper distinctly to take ground in favor of the re-establishment of slavery in Illinois, comes out still more emphatically in its issue of August 13th. We give below so much of its article as contains the gist of its arguments. It will be seen that this extension of slavery is openly advocated, not as an alternative to "negro equality", but on its own merits, as a "humane and politic measure."
