:Location:
North of Chillicothe on the corner of Illinois Route 29 and Yankee Lane.
On investigation by myself and Cyndi Meyer on Oct. 2, 2004, we found the old cemetery to be in GUARDED CONDITION.
It is well maintained by local residents, Mr. and Mrs. Schoepfer who live adjacent to the cemetery. There is no longer a fence around the graves and 99% of the stones have sunk at least 2 to 4 inches into the ground. I counted at least 50 potential grave sites. These included graves with visible stones as well as potential sunken graves. Overall cemetery condition should be listed as GUARDED only because most of stones are no longer rooted or on bases as well as most are sunken graves. According to a Mrs. Millie Ramsey who lives within 100 yards of the cemetery, the State of Illinois removed several graves when the Yankee Lane (road fronting the cemetery), was widened. I could not find recorded data on the number of stones moved/removed or if the graves were re-interred elsewhere.
As of 10/4/04, I am still investigating this occurrence. Steve Slaughter
