Lancaster Cemetery

It is a large, active cemetery with many very old and interesting stones. [Carole Martin]

 

 

:Driving Directions:

From the City of Peoria, drive US Route 24 thru Bartonville, Mapleton, Kingston Mines. Turn right onto Glasford Road (Peoria County Route 33).
Drive into the town of Glasford & go to Main St.  Turn left onto Main St & drive to outside of town.
The paved road turns to the right onto a gravel road (HINKLE CEMETERY). Go straight about 1 mile.
You will cross County Route 60 (Glasford-Canton Road). Cemetery rests about 1/2 mile ahead on the right.

The Cemetery is NW of the town of Glasford. Begin at the intersection of the Hanna City/ Glasford Blacktop and 9100S.
(9100S is also called the Glasford / Canton Rd.) Travel 1.7 miles West on the Glasford / Canton Rd. to Coats Rd.
Turn right (North) on Coats Rd. (15400W) and travel about 1/2 mile to the cemetery. [Carole Martin]
 


History Plaque Reads

Lancaster, founded 1836, first village in Timber Township with hotel, taverns, 17 cooper shops, brick, furniture, hat factories, brewery, opera house, school, post office and 50 homes. On busy days 100 wagons hauled supplies from river to stagecoaches shipping East and West. Home of COL. Allen Fahnstock, who recruited 100 men into Company 1, 86th Inf. Under famous old silver leaf tree known for memorable gatherings. Engaged in 16 Civil War battles.  First grave in cemetery 1839, Samuel Fahnstock, 3 1/2 brother of Col. Fahnestock.  Both buried in family plot.
