Root Cemetery

There are plants and scrubs in the cemetery that are not native to this area.
Therefore, should not be in a protected Natural Area.

Happenings with Root Cemetery
a.k.a North Hampton Cemetery & Moffitt Family Cemetery

End of July 2001

Steve Slaughter had several inquiries, via the internet,  which resulted from the television exposure where he led teams from CBS (local Channel 31) and NBC (local channel 25) to a rural Hallock Township cemetery holding at least 9 Civil War dead. This is an on-going story!!
We will not rest until this disgrace is returned to a cemetery and those who fought for our fledgling nation in the Civil War have a grave that is maintained.

August 2001

-There was a large story in the Sunday, August 12, Peoria Journal Star complete with photos of this on-going fight.

-Monday, Aug. 13 at 8pm. a regular meeting of the Hallock Township Meeting, the situation of this cemetery was discussed.
A story of the event was in Tuesday, Aug. 14, Journal Star, Section B. However, here is how the meeting discussion started:

The Township chair had Steve open the meeting addressing the Root Cemetery. He opened by reading, into the record, a copy of the certified letter that Peggy Robbins  sent to Kevin Peterson (Township Supervisor). In this way, there could be no doubt as to it's contents and it is now a matter of public record. From this, much discussion was produced, some heated, but all constructive.

Read the letter Here!

- Now what? A vote by the Hallock Township Board will be taken sometime in the future on the compromise.
