Biographical Sketch of John P. McClurken
    Excerpt from :
    Portrait and Biographical Record
of Randolph, Jackson, Perry and Monroe Co., Ill

    Chicago; Biographical Publishing Co.; 1894
John P. McClurken is a bright, intelligent young writer, who is making the Coulterville Republican a wide awake and well managed newspaper. He was born inWashington County, Ill., and is the son of William McClurken, a native of .South Carolina, where his birth occurred in 1828. The father accompanied his parents on their removal to this state in 1833, and settled in Washington County, where he grew to man's estate, and where his father was the owner of a large tract of land.
Miss Mary Cherry, as the mother of our subject was known in maidenhood, is a native of Randolph County, and the daughter of the late George Cherry, a pioneer of this section Here she was married to William McClurken, and soon afterward they removed to Washington County, this state, where they were residing at the time of the father's decease, in the fall of 1861. The mother is still living (1894) and has attained the age of sixty-two. Their family consists of two living children, our subject and Maggie E., Mrs. James Torrens, of Washington County. The parents were members of the Covenanter Church, in which body they were active workers.
Our subject was born September 26, 1854, inthis state, and remained upon the home farm until sixteen years of age. Then with his mother and sister he went to Colorado with the St. Louis Western Colony, of which their pastor, Rev. A. C. Todd, was President. While in that state he worked in the Evans' Journal office. After a sojourn of two years in the west, he returned home, and for a few years gave his entire time and attention to the completion of his education, attending successively Geneva College, at Northwood, Ohio; Monmouth College, this state; the Northern Normal and the Valparaiso Normal, in Indiana, thus fitting himself to occupy any position in life. Afterward he taught school for five years, and on July 4, 1891, be became the editor and manager of the Republican, in Coulterville, which he is conducting very successfully. The paper is non-partisan in politics, and since Mr. McClurken has had charge of it, the list of subscribers has been largely increased. Our subject is a member of the Covenanter Church, and is an Elder of the congregation at Oakdale, and also takes an active part in Sunday-school work.

Story of Mother's Death             by : Edgar Atkinson Fuller
Margaret Ann "Maggie" (nee Adams) Fuller

    February 12, 1865 - September 9, 1894
Do you like Ghost Stories? Here is one told to me by "Aunty Dalzell" who took care of us during my Mother's illness and after her death. My Mother and Margaret Ann Wilson were good friends and the Dalzells were tied into the Millers
Our house was a two-story one, with bedrooms upon the second floor. From the front porch you entered a large hall, upon the right side of which was a stairway leading to the bedrooms upstairs. At the left side of the hall was a wide archway opening into the "front room". A person sitting in this room could see nearly all of the stairway.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning in September. My older sister had returned from Sunday School. My twin sister and I, too young to attend Sunday School, had been playing in the yard. It was nearly noon and we were waiting for Aunty Dalzell to prepare our lunch. Grandma Martha Adams was sitting in a rocking chair in the front room facing the stairway.
My Mother was lying in bed in an upstairs room, critically ill with typhoid fever. Death was approaching although we did not realize how close it was. A nurse was at her bedside watching my Mother who seemed to be sleeping quietly and restfully.
At three or four minutes after twelve, Grandma Adams was startled to see my Mother coming down the stairs. Mother was garbed in a loose flowing robe of soft texture and seemed to be sort of floating down rather than stepping. For a few moments, Grandma was too astounded to move. Then she jumped up and exclaimed: "Maggie, what are you doing out of bed? You shouldn't be coming down here."
Nearly at the bottom of the stairs, my Mother smiled sweetly at her Mother, raised her hand in an affectionate gesture of farewell and dissolved into thin air. A few seconds later, the nurse appeared at the head of the stairway and called: "I'm sorry, Mrs. Adams, your daughter has just left us."
I have no recollection of the events of that day nor of my Mother's funeral. I don't even remember when I first heard of this story except that it is one of my oldest memories. It is only fair to add that my older sister took little stock in it. As for me, "I but tell the tale as t'was told to me." But isn't it a lovely ghost story?
