Biographical details frunished by Lee Tyron      April 2009
William E. Sparrow was born March 15, 1831 in Utica, Oneida County, New York and died on
January 30, 1907 in Phoenix, Oswego County, New York. His funeral was February 1,1907, and
he was buried in the Phoenix Rural Cemetery, Phoenix, Oswego County, New York.
I have been working on this part of my family history for these past 3 years and have only recently been
able to clear-up our family "mystery" regarding William Sparrow. It's a long story, but records that I have
discovered show that he was born and died in upstate New York, but sold patent medicines in the South
before the Civil War and married Virginia Ann Ray on October 1, 1857 in Union, Kentucky. Their
daughter, Emma Maria (my Great Grandmother) was born August 10, 1858 in Fulton, New York.
I have been unable to obtain any information on what became of Virginia Ann Ray, but did find that her family
were residents of Tamaroa, Perry County, Illinois and Washington County, Illinois in 1860 and 1870, which might
explain why William Sparrow would have been in Tamaroa and enlisted in the Civil War.
Possibly Virginia Ray died in childbirth and he may have gone with his daughter Emma there to be taken
care of by in-laws. He returned to Upstate NY after the war and married Sarah Grant in 1866. The
1870 Census shows him in Phoenix, New york Y with Sarah and 11 year-old Emma. Emma married my Great
Grandfather William Breckeron September 15, 1875 in Liverpool, New York Y and named her first-born
child Virginia Rae Brecker (born March 15, 1877 in Phoenix, New York), a further indicationof the union of
William Sparrow and Virginia Ann Ray. Up until I discovered this information, my family had assumed for over 60
years that Sarah Grant Sparrow was our ancestor! Our further discovery shows that in the 1900 Census, my
Great-Grandmother Emma Brecker was living in Stamford, CT and indicated that her mother was born in Kentucky.
My Grandmother Effie Brecker (age 7 in the 1900 census )is also listed there and my 83 year-old mother has confirmed
that information.
It would be interesting to discover what ever became of Virginia Ray Sparrow. I have been in communication with
descendants of her parents, brothers and sisters, and they have confirmed the whereabouts of Virginia's parents and
siblings in Missouri and Illinois in 1860 and 1870 Census, but have no info on Virginia.
