Pike County deputies under Sheriff Ivis Johnson cornered the robbers in the hills to the north.Surrendered by officers, the desperadoes shot their way out of the trap and reached the highway at Plainville, in Adams County. None of the officers was wounded, but they reported the small speedy sedan of the bandits was peppered with their bullets.Heading north the robbers reached Coatsburg, where they were fired on by Adams County deputies who had been warned of their approach. The chase went on, with two posses now in pursuit, to Camp Point and then to Golden, where the officers under Sheriff Johnson and Sheriff James Jacobs of Adams County and several Quincy policemen again fired on the fleeing men.The chase from Golden was northward toward Carthage.Three bank robberies have occurred in this part of Illinois in the last few weeks and the route of escape into the hills north of Barry was the same used by the robbers who held up the First National Bank of Barry. The automobile with red wire wheels, was believed to have been the same one used by the Barry bandits. There were five men in the gang that robbed the Girard bank of an estimated $5,000.
