VICKEY (McDANIELS) WANICK , 51, of Griggsville, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at the Passavant Hospital, Jacksonville. She was born Oct. 18, 1956 in Alton to Charles William and Kay A. Rhodes McDaniels. Vickey married John P. Wanick Oct. 21, 1974 in Alton and he survives. She worked as a proces­sor at the Perma-Bound Books in Jacksonville, IL. She enjoyed reading and sewing. She loved her pets chihuahua and rat terrier, "Rocky" and "Chico". Survivors include her husband, John P. Wanick; father and step mother, Charles (Starr) McDaniels of Pearl; mother and step father, Kay (Robert) Deucker of Cottage Hills; two daughters, Mrs. Chris (Carrie) Taylor of Pittsfield and Mrs. Eric (Candice) Maechling of Lake St. Louis, Mo.; a brother, Rickey McDaniels of Alton; and two half brothers, Lee McDaniels and Charlie McDaniels, both of Pearl; two step-brothers, Dwane McDaniels of Detroit and James McDaniels of Illiopolis; three sis­ters, Mrs. John (Billie) Parker of Nebo, Terri McDaniels of Nebo and Mrs. Chuck (Candy) Ambrose of Bethalto; and half sister, Mrs. Joe (Starr) Muech of Loami; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. Bill Herald officiat­ing. Burial was at the Miller Cemetery in Pearl. Visitation was held Saturday, Oct. 4, from noon till 2 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield. Lunch was served after the service at the Pittsfield Calvary Baptist Church

JAMES H. WARDEN , 83, of the Illinois Veteran's Home in Quincy and formerly of Pittsfield died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. He was born June 15, 1925 in Colfax, Wash. son of the late Robert Clement and Ollie Virden Gates Warden. He married Kathryn Elizabeth Tonsor Aug. 26, 1952 in Pocahontas, Ark. and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Susan Johnson and husband Ronald of Pittsfield and Pam Hampton and husband Robert of Mattoon; a son, Sgt. James Robert Warden of Ft. Hood, Texas; seven grandchildren, Sarah Johnson of Moberly, Mo., Rebecca Johnson of Carbondale, Meghan Johnson of St. Louis, Mo., Mark Johnson of Elmhurst, Adam Johnson of St. Louis, Mo., Seth Hampton of Charleston and Jacob Hampton of Mattoon. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Freida Bartling. Mr. Warden was a graduate of Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro and attended college in Galesburg. He was a decorated veteran serving in the U.S. Army during W.W. II in Europe receiving three Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars of Valor. Following the war he became County Coroner of Montgomery County a position he held for many years retiring in December of 1980. He was life member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. He was a past member of the Hillsboro Lions Club. He loved to read and enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the U.S. in their motor home following his retirement. A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 14 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pittsfield. Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Burial was in Quincy Memorial Park in Quincy with graveside military rites conducted by the burial detail from Ft. Leonard Wood Mo.

ARTHUR L. WARE , died here yesterday at the age of 66 years after being ill for several weeks he was one of the oldest and best known citizens of the town, having come here with his parents in 1840. He was a tinner by trade and early took a prominent part in the public affairs of the city, occupying at different times the positions of alderman and city attorney. he was a member of the A.O.U.W. Mr. Ware was born in Philadelphia, Pa. He was married in Barry and eight children were born. The seven who survive are: C.H. and Roy of Barry; Mrs. Thomas Ingnisbee and Mrs. William Sargent, New Salem; Mrs. William Peck, Newton, Kas.; W. L. Ware of New Canton; W. A. of Rock Island. The funeral occurs this afternoon at 5 o'clock under the auspices of the A.O.U.W. lodge.

MARY J. WATERS , 86, of Jacksonville, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. She was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Baylis, the daughter of Seth and Nellie Grammer Whitten. She married William L. Waters April 22, 1942, in Palmyra, Mio. and he preceded her in death in June of 1969. She is survived by one daughter, Michele (husband, Darrell) Willner of Pisgah; four grandchildren, Jackie (husband, Adam) Hale of Jacksonville, Barry (wife, Autumne) Willner of Franklin, Kim Willner of Jacksonville and Darrell (wife, Sue) Willner, Jr. of Wiley, Texas; 13 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Curtis of Coal Valley; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Size, Louisa Powell, and Marjorie Sheeley and three brothers, Marion Whitten, Charles Whitten, and Chester Whitten. Mrs. Waters was a retired educator aide for the Illinois School for the Deaf. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and neighbors. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Williamson Funeral Home. Family will meet friends following the service

NILE ELMO WATERS , 86, of Pittsfield, died July 21, 2008, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. Elmo was born Jan. 28, 1922 in Pike County to Alfred and Nina Cooley Waters. He is survived by his wife , Mary Elizabeth Tucker Waters of Pittsfield. They were married Sept. 9, 1944 and enjoyed 63 years together. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Gordon Monahan, of Nebo and granddaughter and her fiancé, Natalie Griffy-Monahan and Kyle Snyders, of Champaign. He is also survived by Michael and Kellie Monahan, Kiralee and Jaz and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Lois Waters Williams, Lyndle Waters, and Wilford "Tub" Waters. He graduated from Perry High School. Elmo and Mary lived for many years in Winchester until she retired from teaching. They then retired to the farm near Nebo. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. He farmed many years and loved raising cattle. Elmo loved woodworking, collecting pocket knives , and growing purple flowers. Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, from 4-6 p.m. July 23 at the Airsman Hires funeral home in Pittsfield. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 24, at the funeral home with family friend, Rev. Jerry Nichols officiating. Interment will be at Pittsfield West Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to Silver Springs Farm, 10982 423rd Street, Nebo, IL immediately following the service for a luncheon.

MARY JANE (BROWN) WATKINS , wife of John F. Watkins, died at her home southwest of Griggsville Monday night. She had been rather poorly for some time, but on Monday while at work was suddenly stricken and passed away that night. Deceased was a daughter of H. R. and Jane (Chapman) Brown, and was born June 16th, 1850, near the place where her death occurred. On December 31st, 1868, she was married to John, F. Watkins, to which union five children were born, of whom two are living—Harry, at home, and Mrs. Chas. Winterbotham of Chicago; Abbie J., Alice L., and Frank W., having preceded her in death. Her husband also survives, also one sister, Mrs. W. O. Skinner of Griggsville, and three brothers, J. Q. Brown of Whiting, Kans., C. W. Brown of Kansas City, Mo., and W. H. Brown of Latham, Kansas. She was a loving wife and mother and will be sadly missed in the home and by these who knew her best. She was an ideal home maker and resided on the same farm for almost fifty years. Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G. P. Burdon. Interment will be in the Simpkin-Brown cemetery.

WILMA (WHITE) WATERS , age 87 of Liberty Village of Pittsfield Illinois and formerly of Perry Illinois died early Tuesday (May 8 2007) at Liberty Village, Griggsville Illinois. She was born June 16, 1919 in rural Perry Illinois daughter of the late Robert and Mary Bradbury White. She married Lyndle Merle Waters on July 19, 1941 in Quincy Illinois and he preceded her in death on October 11, 1994. Surviving is one daughter Carol Bradshaw and husband Jim of Pittsfield Illinois; two sons Lynn Waters and wife Rosemary of Perry Illinois and Merle Waters of Pittsfield Illinois; 7 grandchildren, Becky Shriver and David Bradshaw of Ursa Illinois, Jill Nicholson and husband Harold of Danville Illinois, Julie Holaway and husband Mark of Jacksonville Illinois, Murray Waters and wife Alissa of Griggsville Illinois, Michele Hannant and husband Kurt of Perry Illinois, Kevin Waters and wife Cynthia of Perry Illinois; 11 great grandchildren Bret and Michael Shriver of Ursa, Dakota Bradshaw of Payson Illinois, Calee Nicholson of Danville Illinois, Katelyn, Caleb and Hunter Holaway all of Jacksonville Illinois, Ashley and Kyle Waters of Griggsville Illinois and Mercedes and Kendall Hannant of Perry Illinois; 2 brothers Dale White and wife Elizabeth of Perry Illinois, Maurice (Frosty) White and wife Pat; a brother in law Elmo Waters and wife Elizabeth Pittsfield Illinois; a special friend Edna Kurfman of Perry Illinois and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Mrs. Waters attended Dexter school as a child and was a 1936 graduate of Perry High School Perry Illinois. She then attended Western Illinois Teacher's College in Macomb Illinois and later taught in Hopewell and Perry Schools for 39 years retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Perry Presbyterian Church where she was church pianist and a member of the Presbyterian Guild. She was also a member of Dexter Community Club, Pike County Home Extension, and Illinois Retired Teacher's Association. Wilma loved to teach and each child she taught was special to her. In 1999 Wilma received the Honored Citizen Award at Perry Pioneer Day. Wilma loved the activities at Liberty Village and recently Wilma was the Valentine Queen at Liberty Village. Wilma also loved to square dance. Above all Wilma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and teacher. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am Friday May 11, 2007 at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville Illinois. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm May 10 at the Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Perry Cemetery Association or to the Liberty Village Activity Fund.

MADELENE (BALDWIN) WEAVER , 94, of Pittsfield, formerly of rural Nebo, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Liberty Village in Pittsfield. She was born Dec. 22, 1909, in Nebo, the daughter of Charles and Opal Hamner Baldwin. She married Logan Merle Weaver in 1927 in Pittsfield; he died in 1952. Two sons and two daughters preceded her in death. Mrs. Weaver was a homemaker. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene in Pittsfield. Survivors are daughter, Rosalie (husband, Richard) Davis of rural Nebo; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services at 11 a.m. Thursday, Ward-Lummis Funeral Home, Pleasant Hill. Burial: Nebo Cemetery.

MARION WEAVER , 90, of Pittsfield, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at the Eastside health and Rehabilitation Center in Pittsfield. She was born Jan. 8, 1919 in Pittsfield, to Raymond and Elizabeth Heightman Weaver. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Pittsfield, Illinois. She enjoyed making quilts, rag rugs, and gardening. She was a member of the Newburg Community Club. Survivors include a niece, Carol (Dennis) Harsch of Madeira Beach, Fla.; a nephew, Robert (Elaine) Weaver of Mohnton, Penn.; and one great-niece and one great-nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Edgar. Funeral Services will be held today, Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield with Rev. Tom Wilber offi­ciating. Burial will be at the West Cemetery, Pittsfield. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of ser­vices at 10 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield. RODERICK L. WEBEL , 44, of Baylis, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at the Illini Community Hospital ER. He was born March 3, 1964, in Quincy to Maurice N. and Mary Eileen Wilson Webel. He married Stacy Carter Sept. 11, 1993 at the Pittsfield United Methodist Church, and she survives. Rod was a member of the Detroit Christian Church. He was a John Wood Community College Orr Agriculture Center graduate. Named the 1997 Top Farm Family in the Nation, Rod was the President of the Western Illinois Fair Board, a member of the Griggsville-Perry Board of Education, John Wood Advisory Board, and the Pike County Farm Bureau Board. He was active locally with MDA, working with the telethon. He enjoyed hunting, traveling (especially cruises), spending time with his family, and working on his farm. Survivors include his wife, Stacy Webel; two sons, Wilson Lee "Will" Webel and Dustin Robert "Dusty" Webel, both of the home; a special friend, Jessica Funk of Beverly; his in-laws, Robert and Carol Carter of Pittsfield; his brother-in-law, Kirk (Vicky) Carter of Bowling Green, Mo.; three brothers, Max (Kathryn) Webel of Baylis, Stephen (Janet) Webel, of Baylis, and Gene (Kathy) Webel of Pittsfield; two sisters, Mrs. Kay (William) Fugate of Fairbury and Ann Williamson of Carrolton; an aunt, Florence Wilson of Quincy; and several nieces and nephews, as well as, several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Mary Webel, and his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Pat Webel, Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. Mark Dickerson officiating. Cremation rites were accorded per his wishes following the services. Visitation was held Thursday, Dec. 11, after 4 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield.

AGNES (ORR) WELLS , 84, formerly of Barry and New. Canton, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Pittsfield Healthcare Center in Pittsfield. She was born Jan. 11, 1920 in Hull to Lewis and Ida Kincaid Orr. She married Kenneth Wells, Nov. 27, 1968 in Quincy. He died Sept. 11, 1974. Mrs. Wells enjoyed baking, embroidery work and fishing. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Quincy. Survivors are one son, Harold Whittaker of New Canton; one daughter, Dolores Mansfield of Fayette, Mo.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Herbert Bradshaw of Quincy. She was preceded in death by one brother, two sisters and one grandson. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m. at Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Visitation was Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Akers Chapel Cemetery in Hull. Memorials are to the Parkinson Disease Fund.

ALTA C. (CROMWELL) WELLS , 82, of Pleasant Hill, died suddenly at 6 Monday evening, November 15, 1965 in Maple Grove Lodge at Louisiana, Mo. Mrs. Wells was horn at Martins­burg Jan. 25, 1883, a daughter of Dr. Oliver and Lydia McClain Cromwell. She attended Nebo schools and was married to Dr. Russell P. Wells of Pleasant Hill, Oct. 1, 1903, and had lived in Pleasant Hill for the past 62 years. Mrs. Wells was a member of the Methodist church in Pleasant Hill, the Order of Eastern Stars, Legion Auxiliary, and active in all community organizations. Her husband preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Mildred) Bittle of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Mrs. Arsa (Maxine) Galloway of Pleasant Hill, a sister, Mrs. John Graff of Seattle, Wash., and a grandson, Jack Pace. Funeral services will be held in the' Methodist Church Nov. 19 at 3:00 with the Rev. Joe Maynard officiating, as­sisted by the Rev. Dean Benton. Interment will be in Crescent Heights cemetery.

ARCHIE WELLS - Funeral services for Archie Marshall Wells, 89, of Rockport will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana, Mo. The Rev. Jim Deck will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 31 at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Samuel Taylor Cemetery at Rockport with military honors conducted by members of American Legion Post 370 in Louisiana. Mr. Wells died Sunday, Oct. 28 at his home in Rockport. He was born Dec. 11, 1917 in Rockport to James and Abbie Marie Fuller Wells. He married Rose Marie Asquith July 25, 1965 at Pleasant Hill and she survives He is also survived by three sons, Gary (wife Anna) Wells of Kinderhook, Marshall D. (wife Doris) Wells of Boca Raton, Fla. and Mike (wife Magdalena) of Louisiana: six arandchildren, Monte (wife Colleen) Wells of Hannibal, Mo., Tim (wife Patti) Wells of Boca Raton, Tricia (husband Derek) Figari of Coral Springs, Fla., Robyn Copher of Quincy, Chad Wells of Kinderhook and Lisa Michelle (husband Bill) of Hannibal; seven great-grand­children, Lauren Dillman and Paige Dillman, both of Hannibal, Scott Wells and Cheyenne Copher, both of Kinderhook, Kelsey Wells of Boca Raton, Trent Figari and Kameron Figari, both of Coral Springs; one brother, Ted Wells of Quincy; and a sister, Hattie Bower of Plainville, nieces, neph­ews and cousins. He was pre­ceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Wells and Jerry Wells and two sisters, Louise Phillips and Emma Doram. Mr. Wells had been the post­master at Rockport form 1951 until his retirement in 1983. He was a veteran serving with the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II services on the USS LCT #567 and USS LST #242. He had received the Victory Medal, American theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre 4 stars and Philippine Liberation 2 stars. He was the founder of the Pike County Water District in 1965 and served as the first President of the Board. He attended the Rockport Christian church. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and working on his home. He was very proud that he had built his own home with plans drawn by his son, Marshall. Pallbearers are Monte Ray Wells, Chad Marshall Wells, Scott Trenton Wells, Timothy Sean Wells, Danny Meyers and Robert Prater. Memorials may be given to Pike County Hospice in care of Collier funeral Homes, Inc., 117 Barnard Dr., Louisiana, Missouri 63353.

DEMA (BARTON) WELLS - 69, of Pittsfield, died Wednesday, August 20. 1969 at 1:35 p. m. in Illini Community hospital in Pittsfield. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p. m. in Plattner funeral chapel with the Rev. William Jones officiating. Burial was in Wells cemetery near Pleasant Hill. Mrs. Wells was born in Pleasant Hill, Aug. 3, 1900, a daughter of Elza and Sara Stewart Barton. She attended Illinois State Univer­sity and the Unversity of Colorado. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution and the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Pittsfield Methodist church and a former school teacher. She married Max T. Wells, Oct. 20, 1923. Surviving are the husband; two daughters, Mrs. William (Kathy) Koeller of New Canton, and Mrs. Lloyd (Barb) Borrowman of Plea­sant Hill; three brothers, 0. T. Barton of Macomb, and A. W. and S. B. Barton, both of Pleasant Hill; two sisters, Mrs. Velma White of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Ruth Galloway of Los Angeles, Calif., seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

JAMES WELLS , 83, of Kinderhook, died in his home Thursday morning, May 23, 1968 after an , illness of three years. Mr. Wells was born at Barry, Dec. 24, 1884, a son of Archibald and Mary Jane Caldwell Wells. He attended rural \schools and was a member of the Methodist church. He married Marie Fuller, May 16, 1908 at New Canton. Mr. Wells was a retired blacksmith. He started his career as a blacksmith with his brother, Joe at Pike Station in 1903. He moved to Atlas and operated a shop and later in Rockport. Funeral services were held in the Locke funeral home in Barry at 2 Sunday afternoon with the; Rev. Robert Byler officiating. Burial was in Taylor cemetery at Rockport. Surviving are the widow; three; sons, Ted Wells of Quincy, Gerald Wells of Willcox, Ariz., and Archie Wells of Rockport; three, (daughters, Mrs. Louise Phillips of Pleasant Hill, Mrs. Emma Doran of Marblehead and Mrs. Hattie McDonald of. Kinderhook; a sister, Mrs. Belle Walker of Louisiana,t Mo.; 16 grandehildren, and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death, by two sisters, three brothers and two children.

JAMES E. WELLS , 95, of Sycamore Health Care Center, formerly of 2601 Turner Road, Quincy, died at 7:58 a.m. Tuesday (October 6, 2009) in the home. Born May 12, 1914 near Rockport, Illinois, James was a son of James H. and Abby Marie Fuller Wells. He married Caroline E. Waigand on March 10, 1934 in Pittsfield, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 4, 1987. James was a graduate of New Canton High School. He was a member of United Commercial Travelers and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. He was the owner and operator of Wells Auto Wrecking for over 50 years, retiring in 1984. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn Mack and her husband Donald of Dundee, IL and Vicki Motley of Boulder City, NV; two sons, Jerry Wells and his wife Henrietta of Quincy and Eddie Wells and his wife Pat of Jonesboro, AR; thirteen grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Hattie Bower of Beverly, IL; a sister in law, Rose Wells of Louisiana, MO; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Wells was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Caroline; a granddaughter in infancy; two brothers, Gerald C. Wells and Archie Wells; and two sisters, Emma Doran and Louise Phillips. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 in the Zehender Robinson Stormer Cookson Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Pratt officiating. Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, near Atlas, Illinois. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 and Saturday morning until the time of the service at the funeral home.

JESSE WELLS , 60, of Puryear, Tenn. died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 in Henry County Medical Center at Paris, Tenn. Born Oct. 5, 1938 in Christian County, Ky., he was a son of Carlton and Edna Manire Wells. He was a truck driver. Survivors include a son, Shawn Wells of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daugh­ter, Shari Feducci of California; two sisters, Dolly Wells Blakney of Calvert City, Ky. and Linda Wells Cherry of Pittsfield; and two grand­children. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Friday at Haley's Mill Mormon Cemetery in Christian County, Ky. Lindsea Leigh died Friday, Aug. 16, 1991 at Illini Hospital. Grandparents are Leroy and Sharon Wells of Smithfield and Harvey and ThelmatShad4 of Rock­port Great-grandfather is Otto Wells of St David. Also surviving is an uncle, Ricky Shade of Rockport.

WILLIAM SCULLY WHEELEN , 90 of Barry, died at 8:15 P.M. Friday, October 21, 2005 at the Barry Community Care Center in Barry. Bill was born February 27, 1915, to Scully and Fannie Robb Wheelan on the farm near Barry where the family settled in 1873, where he resided his whole life. He married Delina Likes, June 18, 1948 in Barry, IL and she survives. Bill attended college at Western Illinois University and Illinois State University at Normal. He joined the National Guard and was a veteran of WWII serving in the South Pacific for 28 months. He received the Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze battle stars, Good Conduct Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon and four overseas service bars. Mr. Wheelan was a 60 year member of the Barry American Legion Post #222 and a member of the Barry Lodge #34 AF&AM Lodge for over 50 years. Bill was also a long standing member of the Quincy Consistory and Ansar Shrine Temple of Springfield as well as past member of the Eastern Star. He was an active farmer and gardener as well as a life insurance agent for over 43 years. His hobbies included beekeeping and raising peaches. His honey and peaches were well known throughout the area. Bill was an Irish tenor and sang at many programs, funerals and benefits. He was a member of the Barry United Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife, two sons Michael Wheelan of Milwaukee, WI and his special friend Janet Main of Barry and Patrick Wheelan and wife, Marla of Kinderhook, IL., three sisters Annabel Johnston of Quincy, Eileen (husband William) Hoyt of Barry and Betty (husband Kenneth) Torrens of Quincy, six grandchildren, Carrie (husband Josh) Wheelan Elbe of Quincy, IL., Aaron Wheelan of Quincy; Michael Wheelan, Jr., and Matthew Wheelan of Milwaukee, WI; Gabriel (wife Tessa) Wheelan of Kinderhook, IL and Betsy Ruth Wheelan of St. Louis, MO., four great grandchildren Jackson Elbe, Tristan, Ethan, and Simon Wheelan. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ralph Wheelan. Graveside services will be Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry with Rev. Nancy Monahan officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Barry American Legion Post #222. There will be no visitation, however family and friends are invited to the services at the cemetery, and a luncheon at the United Methodist Church in Barry following the service.

ROY WHEELING , a well-known farm­er living east of Pittsfield, passed away on Monday, February 19, 1934 at Our Savior's hospital in Jacksonville, where he had been under treatment. The remains were brought to the Skinner funeral home for pre­paration. Mr. Wheeling was the husband of Pearl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Miller of Maysville, and was aged 44 years, 3 months and 2 days at the time of his death. The wife and a daughter, Lenore, aged 4 survive. Funeral services will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, in the Skinner funeral home, Rev. O. F. Jones officiating. Inter­ment will be in Griggsville cemetery.

JOHN WHITAKER , 86, formerly of Baylis died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1982 at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy. He had been a resident of Veterans Home for 11 years. Mr` Whitakerwas born Oct. 9, 1895, near Siloam Springs, a son of Isaac and Mary Pilling Whitaker. He was married Nov. 27, 1917, in Pittsfield, to Lena J. Saxbury. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary last fall. Mr Whitaker was an auto mechanic who owned and operated a garage in Baylis. He retired 20 years ago. He was a member of the United Brethren Church of Baylis, the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans of World War I Barracks 44. He served in France in World War I under General John Pershing. Surviving are his widow, of the Illinois Veterans Home; one son, George R., of Millstadt; three daughters, Mrs Jerome (Lillian) Campbell often, and Mrs Charles (Hazel) Henthorn and Mrs Thomas (Hilda) Browner, both of Quincy; three sisters, Mrs Nick (Frances) Croda of Oakland, Calif., Mrs Earl (Eva) Huckstep of St. Louis, and Mrs Arthur (Dorothy) Gratton of Pittsfield; 15 grandchildren and 39 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, John Jr., four brothers and two sisters. Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the All Faith Chapel at the Illinois Veterans Home, conducted by the Rev William S. Warford. Burial was in Greenmount cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Bauer-Heagy Funeral Home.

LENA (SAXBURY) WHITAKER , 87, of the Illinois Veterans Home formerly of Baylis. died at 11:34 a.m. Monday (Feb. 5, 1990) in Schapers Hospital at the home. Mrs. Whitaker was born July 12, 1902, in Griggsville a daughter of James and Mar Saxbury. She married John L. Whitaker on Nov. 27, 1917, in Pittsfield. He died in 1982. Mrs. Whitaker was employed for several years for the former Brown Shoe Co. She was a member of Baylis United Brethren Church and more recently attended All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veter­ans Home. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, World War I Barracks 44 Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America. Survivors include a son, George R. Whitaker of Millstadt; three daughters, Lillian Campbell of Milton and Hilda Browner and Hazel Henthorn, both of Quincy; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 10 great- great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in All Faiths Chapel in the Illinois Veterans Home by the Rev. William S. Warford. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Duker and Haugh Funeral Home and Friday from 9 a.m. until time of services in All Faiths Chapel. Memorials may be made Disabled American Veterans.

EVELYN E. (CAPPS) WHITMORE , 88, of Perry died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Eastside Health Center in Pittsfield. She was born Sept. 26, 1920 near Griggsville, the daughter of Joshua and Isabelle Dempsey Capps. She married Eldred Whitmore April 10, 1937 in Pittsfield and he survives at home. Also surviving are her children Edna (Wayne) Baughman of Pittsfield, Joan Sunde of Pittsfield, Patsy McKinney of Baylis, Janet Lewis of Florida, Annelle (Don) Kirk of Pittsfield, Sonny (Diane) Whitmore of Perry, and Diane (Al) Santoro of Florida. 19 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren a sister Fern Bolstead of Montana, and a brother Lyndle Capps of Quincy also survive. Mrs. Whitmore was a homemaker and worked beside her husband on the family farm. She was a member of the Home Extension and the Fairmont Presbyterian Church. A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008 at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville. Burial was in Wilson Cemetery in Perry. The family met with friends on Saturday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

FRANCIS JANET (THOMAS) WISCHLER , born in Pittsfield, July 27, 1920 died July 23, 2008 after a brief illness. Janet attended grade school at East School and graduated Higby High School in 1938. She was A employed by the Pittsfield tele­phone company before she met and married William Wischler in 1944. William preceded her in death in 1997. Janet is survived by four children, Bonnie Nelson of Gilbert, Ariz, Diana Cygan of Lisle, Robert Wischler of New Oreleans, La. and John Wischler of New Orleans. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Jill Nelson, Jim S. Nelson, Christine Wischler and Zachary Wischler; and two great- grandchildren, Gian and Martini Nelson and her 92 year old sister, Doris Jean Thomas Berry. Janet was the youngest daugh­ter of the late Hubert and Elizabeth Thomas and grand-daughter of the late 011ie Borrowman Thomas and James Thomas. Janet and her husband moved to New Orleans in 1972 after waking up on Easter morning with the snow covering the roof of their car. After Janet retired, she, her sister and nephew (John Berry) traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada and Mexico until Hurricane Katrina destroyed both of their homes in 2005 after which they returned to Pittsfield for two years. They returned to New Orleans in May 2007 where Janet lived until her death. A funeral service was held Friday, July 25, 2008 at Schoen Funeral Home in New Orleans. Interment was a St. Louis Cemetery #3 in New Orleans.

MARGARET K. WITHUS - After a long and valiant life, Margaret K. Withus, age 95, died Feb. 13, 2009 in Temple, Texas, where she had lived for the past 15 years. Margaret and her husband, William A. Withus, were active residents of Pittsfield and Pike County from 1968 in the American Bed Cross, First Christian Church, Rotary, Pittsfield C.D. Chapter P.E.O. and others. A memorial celebration and reception of Margaret's life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 31, 2009 in the Fellowship Hall at the First Christian Church in Pittsfield. JOHN WITTLETON , a former resident of Barry, died in Mountain View, Cal., April 16. The funeral was April 21, internment at Graceland cemetery, Mountain View, Cal.
