In the year 1831 John & Rebecca (Burton) Burlend were wanting to better prospects for their family and began thinking what the western world might offer. After reading letters of John Bickerdike whose brother George Bickerdike had settled in Pike County IL a year or two efore, Mr. Burlend determined this to be his destination.
Leaving their two eldest children in Yorkshire, England, Mr. and Mrs. Burlend and their five children went to Liverpool. On the second of September 1831 they boarded the vessel "Home" which was bound for New Orleans. (From the book "A True Picture of Emigration" written by Rebecca Burlend, published in England 1848)
