George Lytle was born 10 June 1812 in Ross County Ohio. George was the son of James and Jane (Bartlett) Lytle. In the early 1830's the entire family migrated from Ross County Ohio to settle in Pike County IL. George Lytle was married to Malinda Casteel on 14 June 1837 in Pike County. Malinda was the daughter of Daniel/David and Rhoda (Hensley) Casteel. Malinda was born in TN 25 December 1819 and died 10 May 1894. George died July 8, 1874 and both are buried at Bethel Cemetery near Griggsville, Newburg Twp. Pike County.

Daniel and Sarah (Wade) Lytle

Daniel Lytle the son of George and Malinda (Casteel) Lytle was born 5 November 1845 in Pike County IL. He married Miss Sarah Wade 15 February 1866.

Daniel was with the 137th Regiment Infantry. Organized at Camp Wood, Quincy, IL, and mustered in for 100 days June 5, 1864. Ordered to Memphis, Tenn., June 9. Attached to 4th Brigade, District of Memphis, Tenn., District of West Tenn. Transferred to 3rd Brigade, District of Memphis, July 9. Assigned to guard and picket duty at and about Memphis till September. Repulse of Forrest's attach on Memphis Aug 21. Mustered out Sept 4, 1864. Regiment lost during service 1 Officer and 17 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 31 Enlisted men by disease. Total 50. Following the war Daniel returned to Pike Co., IL; then to Hiawatha, Brown Co., Kansas; then about 1882 to Pana, IL where he lived the rest of is life and is buried there.


Daniel Lytle farm

Per the Illinois State Archives on March 18, 1886, Daniel bought 80 acres located in Shelby County; price per acre was $5.00 for a total price of $400.00. The RR for type of sale meant there was a Rock River or railroad on the property. Daniel's original house and barn are still on the property.

I Daniel Lytle born in Pike County in the State of Illinois aged 18 years and by occupation a "farmer" Do Hereby acknowledge to have volunteered this 5th day of May 1864 to serve as a soldier in the Army of the USA for the period of 100, unless sooner discharged by proper authority; Do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, rations, and clothing as are, or may be, established by law for volunteers. And I. Daniel Lytle do solemnly swear, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the USA and that I will serve them honestly and faithfully against all their enemies or opposers whomsoever; and that I will observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States, and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to th Rules and Articles of War.

This soldier has blue eyes, light hair, light complezion and is 5 ft. 8 inches high. ***********************************

I have the honor to request that you will furnish from the records of the War Department a full report as to the service, disability, and hospital treatment of Daniel Lytle, who it is claimed, enlisted May 5, 1864 and served as Pvt. in Co I 137th Reg. Ill. Vols and was discharged Sept. 24 1864. He was disabled by chronic diarrhea resulting in piles, pistula in disease of rectum, heart and lungs, contracted at Memphis TN August 1864

On the 8th day of November 1915, Daniel Lytle, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is 70 years of age, and a resident of Pana, Christian County, State of Ilinois and that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Griggsville, Pike Co., IL under the name of Daniel Lytle, on the 5th day of May 1864 as a Private in Co. F, 137th Regt. Ill. Inf. Vols in the service of the US in the Civil ware and was honorably discharged at Springfield IL on the 24th ay of September 1864. That he also served no other service. That he was not employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated. That his personal description at enlistment as as follows; Height 5 ft. 8 Invhes? Light Complexion, Blue Eyes, Light Hair and that his occupation was a farmer, that he was born November 5, 1845 at Griggsville, Pike Co IL. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Griggsville IL 8 or 9 years; Brown County KS about 4 years; Shelby and Christian Counties since that time.

Identified as Daniel Lytle who enlisted May 5, 1864 at Griggsville IL under the name of Daniel Lytle in Co. F 137th Reg. IL Vol.
Discharged Sept. 24, 1864 at Camp Butler ILLLllll having served in the Civil War and was in no other service.
States that he is no employed in the US military or naval service
Personal description at time of enlistment (same as prior)
Following the war he returned to Pike Co IL then to Hiawatha, Brown Co KS; then about 1882 to Pana Il, which is still his residence and his occupation has been farming until about 1917 when he was forced to give up work on account of failing health.
Medical: Rupure; kidney trouble; difficulty in breathing; intense and continued periodic headaches; dizziness; vertigo; piles, rheumatism, impaired vision to such an extent as to render reading impossible and in fact, most of the infirmites ofold age.
Did not serve in the Military between April 6, 1917 and Feb. 9, 1922 and that none ofhis family served..
