The Oldest House in Pleasant Hill Built In 1840 A log cabin was built by Jacob Turnbaugh for a home for him to take his bride. Jacob came from a family which was among the earliest to this township.
Jacob Turnbaugh was the second son of George Turnbaugh who came here in 1827. George Turnbaugh was born in Washington County, Kentucky and grew up and married there. In 1820 he moved his wife and family to Lincoln County, Missouri.
Jacob and his older brother were born in Kentucky.
This is known to be the first house in Pleasant Hill. A stone where this house once stood is still there. The town was called Fairfield until June 1836, then is was called Pleasant Hill.

He was buried in Pleasant Hill (Crescent Heights Cemetery), Pike County, Illinois. He married Abigail H. Collard 2 Jul 1837 in Fairfield, Pike County, Ohio. She was born 21 Feb 1819 in Pleasant Hill, Pike County, Illinois, and died 6 Jul 1869. He married Samantha Jane Simpson 17 Feb 1871 in Clarksville, Pike County MO. She was born 13 Nov 1839 in Missouri. Children of Jacob Turnbaugh and Abigail H. Collard all born in Pleasant Hill.

When Jacob was 9 years old his family moved to Pleasant Hill. At the time of this emigration the family
composed of George and Nancy and 6 children. John, Jacob, Jonathon, Lewellyn, Sarah Ann and Joseph. They crossed the Mississippi River at Clarksville and drove by ox teams to Pleasant Hill.
Four Turnbaugh children were born in Pleasant Hill; Jacob's father George, died in 1868 and Nancy Turnbaugh in 1865. Today the only descendents of Jacob Turnbaugh known to Pleasant Hill citizens are a son
W. E. Turnbaugh and a grandson, Frank Turnbaugh. The son W. E. Turnbaugh lives at Galatia, Illinois. He taught school in Pike County for years. At present he is an Evangelist affiliated with the Baptist Church.
The grandson Frank is a citizen of Pleasant Hill, operating the Puritan Hatchery. Pleasant Hill was known to the first settlers as Fairfield.
Jacob married Abigail Collard on July 2, 1836.
