Notes for JULIA KING:  Julia had terrible things happen to her as young orphaned girl. She was sent to live with relatives when, (we think) her parents died. As an old woman she related the story to unburden herself of the guilt she had carried all her life. She related that she had been as assaulted by a man and as a result she had become pregnant. The census of Williamson County in 1880 does show Julia living with her uncle,(her mother's brother) George White and his wife Sarah. She has a child . Julia's grandaughter wrote a fictional story loosely based on her grandmothers story. The story was historically accurate, taking place in Williamson County. However, most of the names were not, except for Julia, and her parents names. I called the granddaughter , Ruth Childers Seamands, ferverantly wishing she had clues to what happened to James and Lucinda King. It turned out to be a different matter altogether. Ruth knew nothing about the Kings, not even Julia's siblings names. We did enjoy talking about family and filled each other in on details. Ruth was wonderfully candid, and insisted the story about Julia was true but had no way of really knowing for sure. A few weeks later Helen Sutt Lind called and told me to read through the index of the "Events in Egypt" that she had recently transcribed. A news article dated November 20, 1879 reported that Julia King had filed bastardry charges against I.J. Pitts of the southern precinct, and the paper then continued with a quote "He has gone west to grow up with the country". The report made it sound as if this was a young man, when in fact he was a man in his forties, married to Lucinda White Kings sister. He had raped his own niece! Julia was probably fifteen at the time. Ruth Seamands was very happy to be able to close that chapter. Julia is buried at Boners Cemetery in Franklin County Illinois

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH KING:

Mary was my Mother, she was very loving and helpful. She often said she didn't know how to cook when she married. She was the baby and got pampered a lot. She always said Pauls Mama taught her to cook. Dad lived on peanut butter sandwiches for the first year of marriage! Their life together started on a sunny day in West Frankfort when Mary went roller skating to the grocery store with her best friend Maxine Kirkpatrick. She was fourteen years old. Paul and his best friend Marion "Thub" Pinkston were hanging around the store when the girls skated by. They eloped two years later to Charleston Missouri. They planned to keep the marriage secret but fate intervened. Mother's Uncle George was in a terrible car accident in Chester,Illinois. When her folks went to school to tell her, she was not there. Uncle George died the next day. Dad went into the Navy during WWll , Brother Bob was a baby , Mom was pregnant with me. Dad was in France when I was born, He sent Mom and I lace gloves, mine were baby blue. I still have them. Not a day has passed that I don't think of my Mother. She was the bravest woman I have ever known. She had both her legs amputated the last few years of her life due to diabetes, but she never slowed down. She continued to keep house from a wheel chair. After Dad died, she politely told us girls" we could come to visit her all we wanted, but don't pack a bag". We were with her every day until her death, only as "visitors". She was an inspiration.(written by daughter, Betty Moake , January 21,1998)

More About MARY ELIZABETH KING:  Her nickname was "Piddle" She was buried in Boner Cemetery ,Franklin County Illinois

Notes for PAUL EDWARD UNDERWOOD:

Dad was one of the best. He loved his family, loved his grandchildren, and loved to fish! He and Mom set up housekeeping at Horseshoe lake every summer and Dad fished every day, (or almost), He and Mom loved to roam the Hills of Southern Illinois looking for everything that is free in life, strawberries, asparagus, "poke" greens, blackberries, dewberries, elderberries, mushrooms, (a really favorite spring treat that Dad could find just about anywhere, although he had his favorite spots that he kept secret! In the winter they traveled to Okeechobee, Florida, where Dad could fish some more, they visited with other retirees who swarmed to Florida in winter. He and Mom loved to go to Flea Markets. Even after Mom lost her leg to diabetes, they continued to yard sale and shop Flea Markets near Olive Branch, close enough to the Cabin that Mom could hurry home if she tired out. Dad knew every tree, flower and herb that grew in Southern Illinois. His family in the Pine Hills knew how to survive on the bounties of nature , I learned a lot from Dad, in fact, I inherited his genes that dictate the love of nature, the outdoors, and a need to know where we came from. Dad was in the Navy in WWII, he worked for the "Pure Milk Company " in West Frankfort Illinois and after the war he went to work for Freeman United Coal Company working first in West Frankfort Illinois, then in Farmersville Illinois and back to Waltonville mine in Southern Illinois, where he retired. Notes for PERRY KING II:  June 5, 1993, excerpt of letter received from Perry after I had sent family information to him. "You asked if I had any information concerning James Clemen(t) King I must admit that I have never attempted to trace either side of the family. At least in part, that was because of something that occurred when I was quite young - I do not remember exactly how old I was but I was about 6 or 8 years old, which would make it about 1934 to 36. We often went for rides, many times to see relatives, especially Martha and Lou, but my mother always went along. However, this time my father took only me. We went to Creal Springs and from there into the country to an old farm house; On the porch was the man we came to see. I thought he was very old, He sat in a rocker, had thin white hair and only a few teeth. Today I would guess he was 85 to 90 years old. Dad introduced him as Uncle Will King. We visited awhile and he was a little slow, but able to hold conversation, and seemed very pleased that we had come to visit him. In the car on the way home Dad told me the following story that I have never heard mentioned again. I can remember him talking some about the Roberts family, how they happened to stop in Williamson County, and about his father George, their home, how he cleared land etc., but he never talked about anyone before his father. Anyway, the story he told, at least as I understood it, was as follows: Uncle Will King had found a wagon on a trail in the woods near his farm. In the wagon was a young man and woman, both dead. Also in the wagon was a baby boy about a year old , and alive. Uncle Will buried the parents, took the boy home and raised him as one of his own, naming him George King. There was no identification on the parents. I have never tried in anyway to verify that story. It seemed at the time that it was a difficult thing for Dad to talk about, and I never brought the subject up again. I have always assumed that it was true. If you have found any records for your great grandfather, George, I would certainly like to know about it. Again , thank you very much for the pictures and the information. Please forgive my tardiness in responding." (Note from Betty...Uncle Billy or Will King would have been about 78 years old in the 1934-36 range...he was married to Hattie Bradley, sister to Julia Bradley who eventually married George Clayton. To furthur complicate this, Lena Clayton eventually married John King, brother of Perry Sr. But, Uncle Will must have been a real storyteller! He and Aunt Hattie had only one child, Grace, who died at about age 17 yrs. They lived in the country near Galatia which would have been between Creal Springs and Galatia. After his death, Aunt Hattie moved to West Frankfort, right next door to Grandma and Grandpa King on Monroe St. I remember Aunt Hattie, she was a favorite person for the neighborhood kids to visit, she always had a nickel for ice cream. Uncle Will was born in 1858 and George in 1865, so he would have been 7 years old when George was born! (and two sisters between them) Will is listed in the Williamson County Illinois census in 1860 along with James,Lucinda and Francis A. King(James's sister) He was listed as age one) I do not pretend to know why Uncle Will decided to tell this Tale, but he deceived a boy many years ago. There is still an unsolved mystery, and the family was truly orphaned sometime between 1870 and 1880, the children were parceled out to relatives, the awful event that shaped Julia's life happened and is documented. George's marriage certificate lists James King and Lucinda White as his parents. The family is well documented, except for whatever happened to James and Lucinda that left their children without parents. I continue to look for the answers...B.J.M. July 8, 1999)
