Marguerite Crain

Marguerite Crain, age 95, of Murphysboro, formerly of Anna and Pulaski County, died at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in Oak Grove Rehab and Care Center of Carbondale.

She was born May 30, 1909, in Vienna, the daughter of Arthur Throgmorton and Mary Murrie Throgmorton. On June 18, 1931, she united in marriage to George C. Crain. He died July 14, 1987.

She was a graduate of Mound City High School, Brown's Business College in Cairo and Worsham Collage of Mortuary Science in Chicago. She was a licensed funeral director and embalmer and with her late husband founded the Crain Funeral Homes in 1932 in Pulaski and Alexander counties. She remained active in the family business until her mid-80s. Earlier she was an equal Partner in the business, managing the office and the paperwork for both the funeral homes and the Fruitville Telephone Company and the Pulaski Telephone Company, which were also family owned.

Mrs. Crain was a member of the United Methodist Church of Anna and a former member of the Methodist churches of Mounds and of Mound City. She also attended the Villa Ridge Union Church for many years. She was a Past Worthy Matron of Caledonia Eastern Star, where she was a 70-year member, and the Past Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her two brothers, Robert and Arthur (Junior) Throgmorton.

She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws, Bob and Elaine Crain of Anna and Bill and Sharon Crain of Murphysboro. She was Me-Maw to her grandchildren and their spouses, Bryan and Suzanne Crain of Anna; Amy Crain and Shawn Miller of New York City; Joe and Ann Crain of Springfield; and Allison and Joey Turner of Pulaski, TN, and to seven great-grandchildren, Ashley and Andrew Crain, Megan and Thomas Crain, Will and Rob Turner, and Gary Crain Miller.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 2002, in Crain funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev. Allen Campbell and F. M. Speakman officiating. Interment will be in the Green lawn Memorial gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crain Funeral Home in Anna.
