Charles Edward "Spike" Joyner, 68, of Cairo died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Daystar Care Center, where he was admitted earlier that day.
He was born Feb. 6, 1935, in Cairo, son of Edward and Eurah Sams Joyner. He married Nancy McCowen.
Charles was a retired barge line worker. He was a former senior vice commander of Cairo VFW Post 2649, member of Pulaski County VFW Post 8891 of Mounds, Ill., and American Legion Post 179 at Villa Ridge, Ill.
He was a U.S. Army and U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Joyner served in the Army with the 92 AFA Red Devils 3rd Infantry Division in Korea, Europe and Japan. While in the Navy he was stationed aboard the USS Des Moines and the USS Alacrity. He was awarded the National Defense, Korean and United Nations Service Medals.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Michelle and Kim Joyner of Mounds; a stepdaughter, Dawn Keith of Cape Girardeau; two stepsons, Scott Walston of Marion, Ill., and Brian Smith of Bardwell, Ky.
Also surviving are three sisters, Shirley Zellers of Erin, Tenn., Nadine Loris of Sacramento, Calif., Betty Myers of Clarkston, Wash.; three brothers, Glen and Bobby Raynor of Sacramento, Donald Raynor of Hollow Rock, Tenn.; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and a great-stepgrandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call at Jones Funeral Home in Villa Ridge from 5 to 8 p.m. today, and after 8 a.m. Thursday at Tigert Memorial United Methodist Church in Cairo.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Kelly Cox officiating. Burial will be in National Cemetery at Mound City, Ill., with full military honors by members of Pulaski County and Cairo VFW posts.
