Contributed by Sally V. Houston

Julia Taggart, born about 1823, arrived in Putnam Co. about 1837 with her mother, Sarah (Gallaher) Taggart; three sisters, Maria Jane, Sarah, and Amanda, plus young brother, William Wallace. They traveled from their home in Armstrong Co., PA, to Putnam Co. via flatboat. The family group was led by Julia’s uncle, Thomas Gallaher, who already lived near Florid, and also included two widowed aunts, Margaret Blood and Ester Campbell.

On 28 May 1846, Julia married Henry Calahill Thomas, eldest son of John A. Thomas, who arrived in Putnam Co. at approximately the same time, as all the families appeared in the 1840 census there.

To Julia and H.C. Thomas were born at least 9 children: Albert Lyle (1847), Alice Pearl (1850), Agnes (1852), Charles Walter (1853), Maud (1855), William Wallace (1857), Clara J. (1859), Ella Aspasia (1861) and Henry Claude (1863).

Her death was 2 Jun 1875. The Putnam Record reported “Died at her house, 4 miles east of Hennepin, June 2, of consumption, Mrs. Julia A. Thomas, 51, wife of H.C. Thomas.”
