Milan was founded by William
Dickson, one of Rock Island County's early pioneers. He brought his family
here from Pennsylvania at age 51.
Milan was originally called Camden Mills. After the watch factory was built on VanDruff's Island, Milan residents
decided to change the name of their town to Milan,
because it sounded more European, i.e. more classy.
