Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Ward Acheson
Rushville Times, November 28, 1928
Last Rites Held Today For Mrs. Wm. Acheson
Mrs. Mary E. Acheson, native of Schuyler county and widow of the late William Acheson, died at her home on East Lafayette street Tuesday afternoon in her eighty-fourth year.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. O. T. Thomas, assisted by Rev. T. W. Rippy, were held from the Mt. Carmel church on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Interment was in the Rushville cemetery.
Mary Elizabeth Ward, daughter of Apollas and Jane Bramble-Ward, was born on the old Ward homestead in Bainbridge township Aug. 27, 1845.
Here as a member of a family of nine children she spent her youthful days and grew to young womanhood. On Sept. 26, 1864, she was united in marriage to William Acheson. Following their marriage the young couple began housekeeping on the farm now occupied by Leslie Thompson, which was the home of Mr. Acheson's widowed sister, Mrs. Margaret Hamilton. Here they resided until 1867, when they removed to a farm in Bainbridge township, which for more than forty years was their home.
To this happy union were born seven children, four of whom survive to mourn the loss of their dear mother, namely: Mrs. Anna Crozier, Mrs. Jennie Demaree, Rollin and Marvin Acheson, all honored residents of this locality. Three children Grace, the wife of Fred Pelton, and two infants preceded the mother to the spirit world.
In 1907 Mrs. Acheson and husband left the old homestead and removed to her late home in Rushville. Here her husband passed away several years ago and in recent years she has had the constant companionship of her daughter, Mrs. Demaree, who resided in the home and of her other three children, who resided nearby.
Mrs. Acheson was a christian woman. Early in life she was converted and united with the M. E. church {South} at Mt. Carmel, the rural church where she learned to worship God as a child, and where she attended church as a wife and mother, and always took keen delight in the progress of the church which had been loved by her for so many years.
Besides the four children, thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Mrs. Acheson is survived by one brother, Jackson Ward, of this city, who is the last surviving member of this pioneer family of nine members, who were the direct descendants of those hardy pioneers of the Ward family who came to Schuyler county in an early day and made their home in Bainbridge township.

Obituary for Nancy "Lina/Linie" Emeline/Emily VanOrder Adkison
Rushville Newspaper, July 1955
Mrs. Nancy Adkison Rites Held Here on Saturday Afternoon
Mrs. Nancy Emily Adkison, 84, died Thursday evening, June 30, at Culbertson Memorial hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the Voorhees Memorial home, the Rev. Wayne Sill, officiating.  Burial was in the Rushville cemetery.
Nancy Emily Van Order, eldest daughter of Andrew Jackson and Nancy VanOrder, was born October 19, 1870, in Bainbridge township, Schuyler county, Illinois.  She grew to young womanhood in her native community and acquired the elementary education in her district school: this training, combined with the everyday practical training requesite for good citizenship and homemaking given by her parents, were in evidence down through her lifetime of more than fourscore years.
It was on June 11, 1890, that she was united in marriage to Logan Adkison, with whom she was permitted to live in happy companionship for more than 43 years, when her husband passed away at their home in Rushville, bringing to her a never-ending sorrow.
Two children, both daughters, came to bless the union of Mr. and Mrs. Adkison, Etta, who is the wife of David Vollmer, and Maggie, who is the widow of Lee Daniel, and with whom her mother had resided and was tenderly cared for during the declining years of her life.  It was after a long period of failing health that Mrs. Adkison passed away on the evening of June 30, 1955, at the Culbertson hospital in Rushville, where she had been a patient since her illness became critical.  Her age was 84 years, eight months and 11 days.
Mrs. Adkison, who was known to members of her family, and her friends, which included even the little children of her home community, was known as "Aunt Lina" and it was considered by her neighbors a happy privilege to have her in their community.  She was of a quite, unassuming disposition, never in any manner seeking publicity.  She loved her home and the beauties of nature and her home was always surrounded by beautiful roses and other choice flowers.  She was always gracious and happy to share her flowers with others, a trait which has always been recognized and appreciated by the children of her community, each of whom will greatly miss the kindness expressed in so many ways by "Aunt Lina"
Besides her two daughters, Mrs. Adkison is survived by six grandchildren, two brothers, Fred VanOrder, (of) Macomb, and Pulaski VanOrder of Rushville, and one sister, Mrs. Clara Peacock, of Rushville. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, a sister, Mrs. Charles Walker, and three brothers, Thomas, Edward and Delino VanOrder.

died: December 16, 1884
Rushville Times, December 11, 1884
Ashcraft, Abner Jr.
On Monday last James Ingle and Abner Ashcraft Jr., of Ray Station, went out hunting. They scared up a rabbit which ran under a pile of brush, when Ashcraft got up on top of it to scare the rabbit out of it, his companion remaining near by with his gun in position to shoot. In moving around the brush pile young Ingle struck a twig in such a way as to discharge the gun, the contents entering Ashcraft's body near the right thigh bone, passing around in front and lodging in the socket joint of his left thigh. Drs. McCurdy and Clark of Vermont were called to dress the wound, as Dr. Barnes was absent. The unfortunate young man is in critical condition, but he may possibly recover.
We are indebted to the Supervisor T.W. Pemberton for these particulars.

Note: I think the date is a few days off  - his tombstone says he died on the 3rd of Nov.   The Rev. Frank (Franklin) Ashcraft was a brother to Marietta Rose and nephew of Henry.  Henry and Franklin became very active in the "Free Methodist"  church late 1870s in IL, then traveled to CA, WA, OR, held revivals and made many converts.  Were instrumental in converting Greenville College in Bond Co., IL into a Free Methodist college.  John found Henry’s grave in Greenville but could not find Franklin who was originally buried in the Ray cemetery and supposedly moved to Greenville. This is not of great importance, just wanted to fill in some blanks. Nancy White

Joseph Ashwood Deceased
Last night at 12 o'clock the veteran singing school teacher and earnest christian worker, Mr. Joseph Ashwood so well known in this county, after a protracted illness, passed away at his home in Oakland township at the age of 74 years.  His funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock from the Methodist church in Rushville.

The Schuyler Citizen, September 1, 1897
In Memoriam
Joseph Ashwood was born in the town of Ridgemont, England, Jan. 7, 1823; died Aug. 24, 1897, in his 75th year.
He was converted and united with the Baptist Church at the age of 16.  When 21 years old he came to the United States and settled in Adams county, Ill., where he was married to Miss Julia Harding, Dec. 9, 1848.  About 1870 they moved to the farm in Oakland township, Schuyler county, where they since resided.  His devoted wife, five sons, one daughter and twenty grand-children sadly mourn their irreparable loss, yet rejoice that for the loved, revered husband and father to die was gain.
Shortly after they moved to this county Mr. Ashwood united with the M. E. Church, of which his wife had long been a worthy member.  During his entire membership he was an active, earnest Christian; was prominent in Sabbath school, and for many years he acted as superintendent of several schools in his neighborhood.  His services were acceptable always, and his pleasant manner and gift of song endeared him to all.  His last illness was protracted and often painful, but borne with utmost fortitude and patient, cheerful resignation.  His end was perfect peace, conscious to the last, and passing away calm as an infant sinks to rest.
Funeral services, conducted by the writer, assisted by Rev. J. B. Horney, were held on Thursday at the M. E. church in Rushville.  A long procession of neighbors and friends came with the family, a large and sympathizing congregation met them at the church, attesting by their presence their esteem and high regard for the memory of a departed friends and brother.  As the sad service closed the sleeping dust of our departed was, in sure and certain hope of a joyful resurrection to eternal life, laid to its last long, dreamless rest in our beautiful city of the dead.
Life's duties done, as sinks the clay,
Light from its load the spirit flies,
While earth and heaven combine to say,
How blest the righteous when he dies.
  J. K. ( Rev. Knowles)

Obituary for Julia Ann Harding Ashwood
Rushville Times, April 17, 1913; page 11, column 2-3
Julia Ann Ashwood
Julia Ann Harding was born in New York City, June 7, 1826, and died at Ray {Schuyler County}, Illinois, April 14, 1913, aged 88 years, 10 months, 7 days.
The deceased came with her parents to the state of Illinois when she was about 13 years of age.  They came as far as Ohio, and overland the remained of the trip, and because of the heavily loaded wagons, she walked most of the way.
They settled on a large tract of land near Clayton, Adams County, and the deceased remained with the parents until she was married to Joseph Ashwood, December 9, 1848.
They purchased apart of the original tract of land and lived there until 1867 or 1868 and moved in Browning Township where they resided until the death of the husband and father which occurred August 24, 1897.
There were seven children, seven sons and two daughters, Sarah died when about two years old, and Thomas died March 21, 1910, being the oldest of the children.  The remaining children four sons and one daughter were all in attendance at the funeral.  There are 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Deceased was converted in early life.  The joy of the Lord came to her heart as she was entering the ground of a camp meeting.  She with her husband, united with the Methodist Church a great many years ago.
Their home was the home of all truly evangelical ministers.  It could be said of them that they were given to hospitality.  Their Christian influence and deeds of kindness ws felt far and wide in the community, the poor and needy always found in them a source of help and sympathy.  And their Christian imprint was made upon their own family, all of whom are Christians and living in hope of meeting the beloved parents who so devotedly gave their lives to this end.  Doubtless many will rise in the resurrection and call them blessed.
The last illness of Mother Ashwood was at the home of her son John, in Ray.  She came on a visit to see her brother, John R. Harding, who was ill at that time and died the following October.  She took sick while on the visit and haggered for nearly a year when the messenger called her from her sufferings to her reward.   She was unable to speak after last Thursday, but on Sunday evening the children gathered about her bed and sang some of the old hymns.  She opened her eyes and her son, John asked her if all was well to raise her hand, and with the rallying strength she had left she lifted her hand, thus signifying her full preparation to meet the Lord.  May peace be to her slumbering ashes till the morning of the resurrection shall came forth the sleeping dust and the power of Christ shall change the earthly to the immortal.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 11 o'clock at the home of her son, John Ashwood, in Ray, conducted by Rev. F. L. Hall, of Greenville, Illinois, assisted by Rev. T. A. Daly, of Vermont {Illinois}.  Interment in the Rushville Cemetery.

His last fatal illness was of long endurance, but was borne patiently.  Frequently he spoke of his trust in God; that everything works together for the good to those who love him.
