Death of Newton Foster
died August 28, 1858
Schuyler Citizen, September 1858
Suicide - On Last Saturday Morning, About 9 o'clock, Mr. Newton Foster, A Farmer Living Some Six Miles North Of This Place Committed Suicide By Shooting Himself.
The circumstances connected with this distressing affair are related to us, as follows. For some time past, owing to ill health, joined with pecuniary embarrassments, so common to all for the past year or two, Mr. Foster has been subject to fits of despondency, and has on several occasions during this reason of depression, remarked to his wife that she would probably succeed better without him than with him. On the morning in question he arose as usual and made the fire; it was observed however that he was in so unusual state of mind, and tears were seen upon his face. At breakfast he ate but little, and as he went about the house, his tears frequently stood in his eyes.
After a while he took his gun down and went out into the woods near by, apparently with the intention of shooting game. In a short time the report of his gun was heard, and directly after, it was heard the second time. Mrs. Foster, from all the circumstances feeling alarmed, sent her little son out to where his father had gone. On reaching the spot he found his dead body lying in a thicket. The alarm was immediately given and the neighbors came in to render assistance.
It appears that he had laid down upon his back, placed the muzzle of the gun under his chin and with a little forked stick which he had prepared for the occasion, sprung the trigger. The bullet lodged in the back part of his skull. The indications are that he never struggled in the least. The gun was lying across his body, nearly as he had placed it, and the stick with which he had sprung the trigger, was lying by his side, one end of it still inside the guard of the gun as he had placed it. Death was instantaneous.
An inquest was held over the body by Thomas Bronaugh, Esq., and the verdict rendered in accordance with the above facts. Mr. Foster was about forty years of age, and leaves a wife and five children to mourn his sad loss. His body was buried on Sunday afternoon, attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and neighbors."
Note: The little boy mentioned in the news story was undoubtedly John F. Foster, who was only 8 years old at the time. Cindy Foster

Obituary for James Curry Agans
Rushville Times, May 14, 1925
James Curry Agans
A sense of sadness amounting to a feeling of personal loss came into our hearts when informed of the death of James Curry Agans, son of Albert and Della Curry Agans, who was born Nov. 5, 1906 and departed this life May 6, 1924: aged 18 years, 6 mos. and 1 day.
He leaves to mourn his death: Father, mother, four brothers: Walter, Oliver, Henry, and Clifford; two sisters; Mrs. Edna Nell, and Edith; also two aged grandmothers, and a host of relatives and friends.
He had been a sufferer for the past six months, but he bore his suffering with great patience and fortitude.
He impressed one as having a religion which produced joy and satisfaction and put the whole life under the control of the law of kindness.
He lived a happy, contented life in the absence of material wealth, and he now has an inheritance that he cannot lose, a mansion not made with hands , in the city whose builder and maker is God.
The home is the acid test of all life and here his life shone to the best advantage, and stood this test perfectly. Contentment, gentleness, patience, and exemplifies the truth of the scripture which says "Godliness with contentment is great gain."
We cannot understand our heavenly Father's purpose in removing from our midst one so young and whose life is so full of promise, just blossoming into manhood, yet we bow to the will of Him who doeth all things well. We do so with the firm belief that God tempers the wind to His shorn lambs, and that it is, His pleasure to give to His beloved sheep.
To the grief-stricken family we tender our sincerest sympathy and commend them to our loving Savior, who alone can comfort in sorrow. We rejoice with them in the assurance that yonder, in the Father's house, at the Master's feet, with his baby sister, Ada Grace, and loved ones who have gone before, he rests in the joys of life eternal, waiting their coming to the heavenly home. "There is a land of pure delight, where saints immortal reign; Infinite day excludes the night and pleasures banish pain."
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bethany M. E. church, conducted by Rev. C. W. Monson; Internment in the Lyon's cemetery.
