Ralph J. Ewing, 67, Died Suddenly Sunday Morning
Ralph J. Ewing, 67, prominent Rushville township farmer, died
Sunday in the Culbertson Memorial hospital. He had suffered a
cerebral hemorrhage Saturday night at his home south of Rushville.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Rushville
First Methodist church with the Rev. Harry S. Crede, of Quincy,
officiating. Burial was in the Rushville cemetery.
Ralph J. Ewing, son of William A. and Ellen (Marquis) Ewing, was
born in Astoria, July 6, 1887, and passed away Sunday, Oct. 3 at
Culbertson Memorial hospital in Rushville following a cerebral
hemorrhage suffered a few hours previous.
His entire life was spent in Illinois, with the exception of eight years spent in Webster and Sigourney, Iowa.
On May 29, 1907, he was united in marriage to Annie Settles,
daughter of Leander and Jessie (Rebman) Settles, of Rushville. To
this union were born eight children, all of whom survive, namely:
Mildred, wife of Joseph Walters; Mary, wife of Gilbert Englehart and
Martha, wife of Ray Black, all of Iowa City, Iowa; Glen L. of Lombard;
M/Sgt. William R. with the U.S. Armed forces stationed at Springfield;
Margaret, wife of Max S. King, Don E. and James A. of Rushville.
Fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive.
On Feb. 10, 1940, his wife, Annie, passed away. He was
later married to Mrs. Rose Cox of Beardstown, who together with two
sisters, Mrs. Emma Linkhart of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Mrs. Hattie
Reiley of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and two brothers, Joseph A. of Springfield
and Hal A. Ewing of Rushville survive him.
Ralph, who was known to his many friends as "Jack", chose
farming as his profession, and was actively engaged in that work until
his retirement a few years ago.
One of his predominate characteristics was the love and devotion
to his children and grandchildren. He was a good neighbor, ready
to offer a helping hand or assistance in time of need, and will be
sadly missed in the community of which he was a part.
Obituary of Hal A. Ewing
died April 16, 1957
The Rushville Times, April 18, 1957
Hal Ewing, 63, Dies Suddenly Here On Saturday
Hal A. Ewing, 63, prominent Rushville citizen, died suddenly
early Saturday evening, shortly after he had voted at the school
election. He suffered a heart attack while in his car at the
school grounds and was rushed to the hospital where he died.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Christian
church with Rev. Mack Warren of Bloomington in charge, assisted by Rev.
LeRoy Cronkhite. Burial was in the Rushville cemetery.
Hal A. Ewing, son of William A. and Ellen Marquis Ewing, was
born July 20, 1893 in the Christian Neck neighborhood near Ray.
Educated in the Schuyler county schools, he lived on the family farm
until entering army service in World War I. He served first in
the cavalry and then as sergeant in the field artillery.
On August 25, 1920 at the Methodist church in Macomb he was
married to Mildred McMillen, daughter of Gilbert and Myra Rose
McMillen. One daughter, Myra Jean, is the wife of Milton Lawler.
After discharge from the army he entered the employ of the
Burlington railroad and after serving a decade on the Beardstown
division and other assignments accepted appointment with the newly
organized State Police under the administration of Governor Louis L.
Emmerson. Those were pioneering days when the force rode four
cylinder Henderson motorcycles and drove four cylinder model A Fords.
Additional public service was in the corporation department,
Secretary of State, where he was employed at the time of his
death. Long active in republican organization work he served in
many posts. He could always be counted on for assistance on civic
projects in his community. The end came as he was leaving the
voting polls in the grade school building.
He was a member of the Rushville Christian church. He
loved people and that love was returned by all who knew him, old and
young alike. Children especially found in him a champion and ever
faithful and understanding friend.
He was a charter member of Schuyler Post No. 4 of the American Legion, admired and respected by his comrades.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Mildred, daughter,
Myra Jean Lawler, grandchildren, John, Jeanne, and Jane Lawler, two
sisters, Mrs. Thomas Linkhart, Grants Pass, Oregon and Mrs. Maurice E.
Reiley, Oskaloosa, Iowa, and one brother, Joseph A. Ewing,
Springfield. His older brother, Ralph J. Ewing preceded him in
death.
A loving husband and father, his home was his castle and never
happier than when in the company of the grandchildren he loved so
well. A favorite uncle to many a nephew and niece his counsel and
unfailing loyalty will be sadly missed.
All generations loved him. Serving mankind was his
vocation. Truly he loved his neighbor as himself as Christ
commanded. Truly it can be said of him well done good and
faithful servant.

and family when she was stricken before she had time to remove her
wraps.
Other residents of the apartment house heard her fall, and

township, and assumed the care of his four young motherless children
who shared equally the devotion which she bestowed upon her own son,
Joseph.
Mrs. Ewing was an ambitious, home-loving woman and a member of the Christian church of this city.
She was bereft of her husband in the year 1926, and since that
